Do you have checks? If so, when's the last time you used one?

Anonymous
Yes. I used one last week.

One on Tuesday for the house cleaner and one tonight for a field trip. I probably write 5-6 a month.

But these businesses probably prefer not paying these fees. And yes the fees are that bad. Inflation impacts this too.

They could have just said we will take credit card but there is xyz processing fees.

I’m 34 and write a few checks a month. Lawn guy, church, school one-offs like a field trip fee. I use Venmo for some services and between friends.

DH is in cyber and very conservative about inputting bank info on just any website. He doesn’t trust our church’s donation portal and we don’t want to make them pay the credit card fee, so we write checks instead. Same for the county property tax portal.

I use checks for bills, rent, taxes, and pretty much any time I need to send payment through the mail. I don't really use them in retail stores, though...never understood people who do that. I generally prefer cash for smaller (under $200-ish) retail purchases and credit cards for larger ones (for the extended warranty and return benefits, among other reasons).

This morning, to pay the plumber who thank heavens came immediately when I had an emergency.

I have a 10 pack of stamps from back in 2008 that still has 2 left.. yet they ask me at the post office when I ship a package if I need any more.

I didn't have them for years, but my husband did, so paid for the infrequent "check" expenses. I got them about a year ago because my husband kept putting off giving me one to mail in my passport (just laziness/procrastination) and I figured it was easier to just get them. We ended up going in person to the passport office with our young child, and i turned my in. I couldn't find my checkbook that morning and he wrote the check anyway.

I send e-checks through bill pay twice a month for utilities. Other than that, I paid a hairdresser in check a couple of times since I got my checkbook. She would have accepted venmo, though. (these were pandemic haircuts in a neighbhors yard, otherwise I would have planned for credit.)

My kids are in Catholic school. I'm thinking of getting a stamp with the school's name on it because I write them so many freaking checks.

I have strong memories of my mom writing checks to Giant growing up. But towards the end of her doing that, they had a printer they would run them through that printed the whole check for you, you just had to sign it.

Also she'd go to the drive through teller and write a check to "cash" to get money out. Seems like such a huge hassle now! Ha.

You kind of still have to do this! It’s a withdrawal slip but you have to write out the number and everything.

I have only used an ATM since the 90s! But maybe for larger withdrawls...

Girl scout fees, gutter guy, repair guys, contractors, etc. I don't use them a LOT but I use them.

I ordered checks to pay our cleaning lady twice a month. Before that I hadn't used a check in ~5 years.

The lady asked if I'd go home to get one and come back to pay. I told her I didn't have checks at all, period. She then asked if I'd go get a cashier's check from the bank. I was flabbergasted. Um, no. I told her that had their (sudden) preference for a check payment been made known when I dropped my car off, I'd have have gotten a cashier's check before returning to pick up my car. However, at 4:30 pm I was not going to order another Uber to go to the bank for a cashier's check and Uber back to pick up my car. She then reluctantly took my credit card payment, but not before mentioning how it was going to be a "big hit in fees" for them.

I haven't had checks in at least 6 years now. This is the first time I've even had someone request a check payment in maybe 10 or 12 years??

Anyway, this morning I was scheduling our end-of-the-season chimney cleaning and the person scheduling the appointment told me that a personal check is their preferred method! Have credit card fees really gotten that high?? I told her we might need to push the appointment because I'd need to order checks and it'd been so long since I had any that I wasn't sure how long they take to arrive. She quickly said, no no, they'll still take a credit card and there was no need for me to go out of my way. But gosh, is this going to be the new normal??

Tape players and CD players are hot again, 90s fashion in back, and I guess paying with checks is now the thing to do!

Well, OP, would you like to give away 3% of your paycheck for no reason at all?

It's difficult to understand how you didn't know that this is a hit to anyone you're paying. Are you this clueless in all aspects of your life?

This is a you problem. You should always have checks available if you're doing business with boomers.

Frickin' Gen-Z.
