I just had a repair done earlier this week and when I went to pay, they asked for payment by check. I told them I didn't have a check. The lady asked if I'd go home to get one and come back to pay. I told her I didn't have checks at all, period. She then asked if I'd go get a cashier's check from the bank. I was flabbergasted. Um, no. I told her that had their (sudden) preference for a check payment been made known when I dropped my car off, I'd have have gotten a cashier's check before returning to pick up my car. However, at 4:30 pm I was not going to order another Uber to go to the bank for a cashier's check and Uber back to pick up my car. She then reluctantly took my credit card payment, but not before mentioning how it was going to be a "big hit in fees" for them. I haven't had checks in at least 6 years now. This is the first time I've even had someone request a check payment in maybe 10 or 12 years?? Anyway, this morning I was scheduling our end-of-the-season chimney cleaning and the person scheduling the appointment told me that a personal check is their preferred method! Have credit card fees really gotten that high?? I told her we might need to push the appointment because I'd need to order checks and it'd been so long since I had any that I wasn't sure how long they take to arrive. She quickly said, no no, they'll still take a credit card and there was no need for me to go out of my way. But gosh, is this going to be the new normal?? Tape players and CD players are hot again, 90s fashion in back, and I guess paying with checks is now the thing to do!
