So, leave it to FCPS School Board to really F*** up the HS students taking NATIONAL EXAMS!
They just found out that Eid is NOT on the date they planned it to be "observed". (don't know why it took this long to figure Eid out). Now, if the SB was not so busy creating drama with "equity" and prohibiting kids from taking NATIONAL tests on holidays that apply to only a few, this would not be a problem. But, now it IS a problem. They originally told everyone (until today) that May 3 is an "O" day for Eid, and no one can take the AP Psych or AP Environmental Sci tests on those days. Both tests had to move to the College Board's official make up day (May 17). I was not happy about this b/c my kid is taking both of these AP exams. And while it is nice to have extra time to prepare, the forced shift to the make-up day meant that my kid gets no make-up day. And she has to take both tests on the same day -- hope nothing happens and she isn't sick on May 17th. But then in today's newsletter from FCPS, there's this little ditty: _________________________________________________________________ Date Change for Eid-al-Fitr for the 2021-22 School Year Calendar The current “O” (religious and cultural observance) day for Eid-al-Fitr on FCPS’ 2021-22 School Year calendar was incorrectly listed as Tuesday, May 3. Please note that the correct date is Monday, May 2. We apologize for the error. View the updated 2021-22 School Year Calendar. _______________________________________________________________________ For most people, this is truly a footnote. But for kids taking AP Psych and AP Enviro, it apparently means that they are now taking those AP exams on May 3rd????? And SUPRISE to those who were planning to take AP US Gov, AP Chem, AP Spanish, or AP Japanese ---- > You probably aren't going to be taking your AP exam on May 2nd.... welcome to the make up date: May 17. Hope you aren't sick or don't actually need a make up b/c you aren't getting one. |

I am so pissed. My kid, like 1/2 the senior class is taking AP Gov. That’s a huge number of kids. The Regulation specifically states that national testing like APs are not affected by O Days. But they will move half the senior class to makeup days anyway.
And here’s the worst part. Which thank God is not my kid. Chem and Spanish are scheduled at the same time, and makeup day is the same. These are very popular APs and lots of kids take both. Those student would normally take one test on 5/2 and one on 5/17. That’s why the makeup block exists. Because sometimes 2 APs are scheduled at the same time. Now, THEY JUST CAN’T SIT FOR BOTH. They can take one on 5/17 and there is not block to take the other. Those kids lose AP credit. So incredibly wrong. |

OP here.
I suspect they are going to correct their "correction." When I googled "Eid 2022" it seems Eid starts on sundown on May 2nd and ends at sundown May 3. So, I think the "O" day should be May 3, and they had it right initially. BUT, they never should have prohibited kids from taking AP exams on an "O" day. My kid will be taking back-to-back AP exams on her first time taking any AP exams. The only question I have is whether it is going to be May 3 or May 17. |
|
Bottom line is that FCPS should not be mucking around with AP exam dates.
They can pick whatever "O" days they want -- but leave AP exams out of the equation. |

I don't support lawsuits as general rule.
But I would 100% support a lawsuit for this. There are no secular reasons (attendance or staffing) for not holding the AP exam on this date. Hopefully Youngkin steps in quickly and reminds the FCPS school board that O days are illegal. |
Our HS is 1/2 empty on every O day. Looking at the calendar for next year, its a freakin' joke. Especially the September - November. There is no consistency and kids will have a hard time getting into a rhythm. Why are there are two O days for Día de los Muertos? |
Have you contacted anyone or been contacted by anyone about the change? I’m wondering about AP Chem on May 2nd. You’re right that the O day should be May 3 |
Does this prove that no one cares about Eid 2022? I ask because if indeed the school board got the date wrong (which I don't think they did) where were all of the families that support Eid being an "O" day when it was published wrong in the calendar a year ago. I can't believe folks that care would not have raised the issue. So 1) either someone just really messed up the calendar (making May 2nd an O day) causing all kinds of potential issues for AP students for incompetence or2) no one cares about this O day and it shouldn't exist, |
| Korean parents don't give a sh*t about lunar new year. If FCPS felt obligated to give Asians a "H", they were wrong. |
They aren’t following their own regulation, which exempts O Days. |
| Good job Abrar Omeish! |
Should say, which exempts APs from O Days. I have a kid affected the date is 5/3. I emailed Pekarsky twice asking why APs are being moved with no secular reason and against FCPS’sown regs and sent the question to her townhall then watched the d*mn thing (total viewership: 27). She has never responded. |
| October 2022 is a mess. Starts with a stupid 1/2 "O" day followed by a "H" day. Two PW days. Indigenous Peoples' Day. And a 2-hour early dismissal day due to end of 1st Quarter. SMH |
October 2022 is terrible. It will be awful for young ES students and many SPED students. |

FCPS school board only good at one thing: Keeping kids out of school.
And they can't even get that right. |
