| The Eid date is predicted a year in advance but may be adjusted based on lunar sightings. https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/when-eid-2022-expected-dates-22320072 |
Well, that surely creates a HOT MESS! We're trying to schedule a calendar and make decisions that affect thousands of kids --- but we have to wait to see what the moon looks like? This is absolutely stupid. |
+1 This should absolutely not be something our schools revolve around if there is not even a fixed day that can be known in advance. Craziness. |
Yeah I grew up celebrating Eid and I added that feedback on the last 2 years’ calendar surveys. I’ve always recalled that you had to wait for the official moon sighting to declare Eid so the date can shift. |
This O day calendar was Omeish's baby. How did she get the date of Eid incorrect? |
Smacking my head…look, I’m Jewish and it’s somewhat stressful that the schools have this far been open on the High Holidays. But, in such a multicultural area, I have noted on previous surveys I think the answer has to be just not to recognize any religious holidays, kids should not be penalized for taking a day off and I think important school events should not be scheduled on those days - band concerts, entrance exams, graduation, and for HS students I think it would make sense not to allow tests on those days, at least unit tests, but otherwise they just need to get on with having school. This O day thing and days off for all these holidays is a mess. |

No one would really care if Eid was an "O" day if FCPS hadn't also decided that NO ONE can take AP tests on "O" days!
That is where FCPS screwed up big time. Omeish isn't fulfilling her duty to represent the Muslim population very well if she wasn't able to tell the SB about Eid being lunar-dependent. I won't be voting for her again. Of course, it'll be too late by the time there is another election. My youngest will be in his last year (in 2024) and the damage from all the SB has already been done. |
My kids are younger but it really is a shame about them messing up the AP test schedule like this. I posted above that I was raised Muslim. For my part, I know my parents would have made me take the AP exam on whatever date it was scheduled for, regardless if it was on Eid. |
Chinese dad here. I attended high school in FCPS in early 90's. Yes, we celebrate lunar new year in my house but I rather see my kids go to school than stay home and do nothing! |
| The school board markets these religious holidays as a huge victory for equity but academics were an afterthought. |
what's new? |
So the rest of the country can take AP tests on scheduled days, but FCPS is basing their calendar on moon sightings? |
Well the rest of the country isn't as woke and inclusive as FCPS. |
Yes. Also, FCPS kids get delayed scores which means they don’t have the info they need for college registration. And they get a different test curved it’s only makeup kids. Most of which will now be FCPS. Normally, our kids do well because we compete with Alabama. Now, it’s less than 10% of FCPS kids getting a 5 on some tests. Plus, kids in Spanish and Chem literally cannot sit for both. This screws our kids all over the place. |
When FCPS accommodates Eid more than Dearborn, MI— or Arab nations with kids taking APs, perhaps the issue is FCPS. Just sayin. |
