Intense Pain After First Peloton Ride

Anonymous
Sunday afternoon I took my first peloton ride. Coincidentally it was also my first workout in a few years, other than walking/hiking. I rode for MAYBE 35-40 minutes and I did a beginner video.

I have the WORST pain along the backs/sides of my thighs right now. Google has convinced me I've given myself rhabdomyolysis. I am literally the least fit person EVER so I don't know the difference between standard peloton soreness vs. giving myself a freaking kidney disease because I took one peloton ride. (Though the good people on the r/peoton sub insist that most rhabdo cases in peloton are in new riders so that's not helpful)

You’re fine. You just worked a muscle group you haven’t in a very long time. The worst thing you could do right now is stay completely still. Get some walking in and give it a few days.

That’s long for a beginner ride and not having worked out in years. Try 20 minute rides for a while until you get used to it. Enjoy the bike!

That was a long ride for someone who never works out. Do the beginner program and build up slowly. Be sure to do a pre ride warmup and a post ride stretch.

Agree that was a long first ride. Did it hurt while you were riding? I would also check your settings and make sure your seat is at the correct height, etc.

It may hurt a lot more tomorrow. After long breaks from exercise, I find Day #2 (not the next day) to be most painful. You may actually want to hop back on the bike today and just go for a VERY easy ride to help work out the soreness.

That's a long ride for the first time! You have muscle soreness.

Did you stretch before and after? Did you do a cool-down ride? If not, I suggest doing one of their short stretch classes now and then a warm-up and cool-down ride next time you ride. You should stretch after every class. Peloton has tons of content, including these classes I've just recommended. They can be as short as 5 minutes and are definitely worth it.

You have a case of the DOMs. You’ll be fine. Build up to it a little more slowly next time.

Stick to 20 minute rides and always always do a post ride stretch. I've been riding for 2 years and if I ever skip my post ride stretch I can tell. It makes a big difference. You did to much to soon and your body didn't like it.

Agree with previous posters. You did a new exercise and your body is getting used to it. I regularly workout but if I do something new, I can often feel it the next day. If I haven’t run in a while and go out for more than a few miles, I have trouble walking down the stairs.

Hey--give yourself some credit for getting on the bike for your first ride. That's a big step!

You might have also been dehydrated. I get crazy muscle cramps if I do a long ride without drinking enough water. But yea, I think I did 20 minutes plus a stretch my first ride ever. It took a couple of weeks to get to 30 min and a year later, I now regularly do 45 and 60 min rides. Don't be discouraged--just give your body a chance to adapt. Warm up, cool down, stretch and drink water.

You don't have rhabdo. I mean, it is possible, and most spinning cases ARE first-timers who overdid it, but you'd have pain beyond soreness and other symptoms.

Take a couple days off and really ease into working out again.

Walk, stretch, get on the bike and just spin your legs out for 10 minutes. You overdid on our first ride. Lactic acid probably built up and can be miserable! You need to work the muscles slowly to get rid of the lactic acid.

muscles = back and sides of thighs
Rhabdomyolysis = kidneys
