Masking outdoors

What do you think about wearing a mask outdoors for a private lesson? Is there any benefit? My son takes weekly outdoor tennis lessons (weather permitting). The tennis coach does not wear a mask so I don't make my 9 yo wear one, but after our lesson was over - the teacher put on a mask for the next student who was the same as my kid and was also wearing a mask. When I later asked the tennis coach, she said the mom wants to wear a mask at all times due to the pandemic. The child is not immune compromised. Should we be wearing a mask outdoors too? I guess we would if it were not a private lesson or if the teacher asked us to do so. Would most of you ask the teacher to mask and have your child wear one too?

We have never masked outdoors.

Of course. If nothing more than for appearances. Others are looking and may find your irresponsible. Just like you had thoughts on the boy in the lesson after you, people have thoughts on you.

Let me guess you live in Montgomery County?

Since when is taking a simple precaution a problem? Isn’t washing your hands along the same lines?

As a former professional dancer, I’ve never seen greater commitment to performative art than right now.

I only wear one outdoors if I didn't feel like putting on makeup.

I know it sounds crazy but I’m practically positive we caught omicron outdoors. Two of our household went on a jog maskless right before New Years on a somewhat busy neighborhood trail system passing a lot of other maskless joggers and walkers. They got sick 2 days later. We had no other exposure vectors. We don’t normally mask outdoors but we are now going to till this surge abates.

No I would not wear one outside unless I’m
Somewhere where the establishment requires it.

My son takes outdoor tennis lessons and he's never masked even at the height of the pandemic. In addition to the data on lack of real spread outdoors, he's on the other side of the court from his coach. Can't imagine a less useful thing than a mask far away from others outdoors. I would have felt horrible making him mask outside like that in the heat of the summer when he was playing.

I wouldn’t/don’t wear a mask outdoors unless it’s really cold and I want to keep my face warm or someone else requests it or is already wearing one (eg chatting with another parent on the playground). I wouldn’t make my child wear one for a private lesson unless the coach requested it. I think you have a good coach here who’s not making a big deal out of different parents’ risk preferences re: COVID.

No way, especially not for tennis.

I do not mask outdoors and I wouldn’t with an adult instructor at tennis personally.
