$12/hour for part-time nanny?

| I just saw that a friend posted for part-time assistance with her 4-year-old. She wants help 5-9PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and is offering $12/hour. She wants some light housekeeping included for that price too. Are there really people working for that amount of money? She is a single mom so I get her finances are probably tight but based on her job, I'm sure she earns 80-100K. |

You could get a mother's helper for that price, or a babysitter probably. Those aren't nanny wages.

Where does she live?
It’s been a few years since I used a sitter but the going rate for an older high school or college age sitter was $15 hour. Her expectations are absurd. |

This. That's an okay amount for a young teenager with no experience who will never be alone with the kids (I'd personally still offer $15, primarily because I think we need to value care work more, but then I can afford that so it's easy for me to say). But no adult, and certainly not one with any babysitting or housework experience, should be paid that little for what is essentially hard labor. |

| About 10 years ago I was getting $20/hour as a grad student doing school pick up and 3-7pm, no housework. We now pay a college student $25/hour for approximately the same hours your friend is looking for, also no housework. Maybe we are overpaying, but offering a bit more gave us more & better applicants and it has worked out. |

My teen aged daughter made $20/hr when a senior in highschool! Your friend is cheap and crazy as minimum wage is up to $15 in many jurisdictions. |
