Ox-tail - expensive?

Anonymous
I’m making prime rib for Christmas dinner and one of the ingredients is ox-tail (I guess to render fat/drippings). I always thought of ox-tail as a pretty inexpensive cut. Like for soup. It was $18/lb. For real? I bought it at H Mart and didn’t even check the price and was shocked at checkout when they rang it up.

I looked the other day. $15/lb

The prices have gone up. I remember paying $6 per lb at H Mart a few years ago.

Omg, generally speaking, Hmart prices are off the chart now. Even things made in US (like kimchi) have gone up like crazy

Ironically the whole point of that cut of meat is that it was dirt cheap, but now it’s stupidly expensive. Like so many other things in life, I guess. It’s the gentrification of the butcher aisle, lol.

Pay no attention to inflation. It's good for you.

It's not inflation, it's hipsters. Oxtail used to be super cheap when I was a kid but it's been expensive for several years. I went to make a soup I used to love like 5 years ago and it was over $10/lb. The same thing happened to pork belly before that, and I'm sure some other cut before that.

Just like pork belly before it you can still get it somewhat cheaply at ethnic markets, but not as cheaply as before it had a "moment."

This will make you cry. I used to get out for 2.99
People have discovered that it's a nice piece of meat where is before they thought it was basically a waste product

+1

Oxtails were give away pieces from the butcher. DH and I were laughing recently about how boneless, skinless chicken breasts are now the throwaway part of the chicken - now people just want the wings. The wing used to be the piece "the masses" didn't want. I don't even bother trying to make oxtail stew anymore - it would be at least $40 before I bought anything else.

They are now basically a luxury item and I am not cheap. I'm not making $40+ oxtail stew, though.

Everything is so crazy expensive now. I have a deep freeze a s pulled out beef short ribs from past year to cook on Friday. Looked at the sticker and I picked them up a year ago for 7.99/lb They are double that now.

Thank God for my ddep freezer. Have oxtail to from Costco from last year or 2 as well.

I’m dreading the day chicken thighs become expensive

You reap what you sow. This is what the state voted for. Think before you vote.

I saw cauliflowers prices at $5 each at Lotte recently.
