they’re the best RL club

Better than VSA, Arlington, etc? Uh, no.

And those clubs have pathways to ECNL, which GFR does not

Go back a few pages, GFR is a neighborhood club, they don't care about no stinkin pathways!

Right, we should only compare GFR to other NOVA RL clubs with no pathway. And, GFR is indeed the best! Pay no attention to the fact they are the only one, because they are the BEST!

I am confused about this point. My sense is that there is little player movement from RL to ECNL at clubs with both. Someone who develops at GFR is good enough, they can try out for any ECNL or GA club. If insiders have no real advantage (and perhaps a disadvantage because they are not a bright new shiny thing), why does it matter if the club has a “pathway”? And if you are playing on an RL team anyways, isn’t it better to be on the top team at your club than a secondary priority? Do “pathways” really matter if your DC is good enough to make it? And if not aren’t they better off not being relegated to a second team?

Agree with this given our experience at several clubs. Plus GFR has teams competitive or even better than many teams in “higher level” leagues. It really all depends on the particular team/coach and you can’t generalize a club as good or bad.

A PP said it’s not fair to compare GFR to VSA and Arlington, because those clubs have pathways. If it is better to not be “relegated to a second team” then GFR should compare favorably to Arlington and VSA…I don’t think they do, so I think you are off there.

+100

"Pathway" is a marketing term for parents that has no tangible effect on any specific player's outcome. Beware any club who uses the term heavily.

Lol - a neighborhood club with ~$3M in revenue per year.

Yeah it’s not quite the little lemonade stand run at town’s farmers market by a friendly mom and pop

And according to someone who went to the board meeting the other night even with that much revenue they're still operating at a huge loss financially

So if running at a financial loss and RS moving roles, is there expectation for tryout numbers and acceptance rates to be higher or lower than last year (where last year numbers were definitely off from prior years)? Will the coaches with better reputations that are coaching older teams stick around or move on?

I guess it depends why acceptance rates were lower. Which coaches at older teams have a good reputation? You can't possibly mean the girls side which for U14+ is all GD. He chases girls out the older they get and should not even be coaching the teams he has at this point! The boys side older teams are RS. He's a good coach but will he still coach with his new job? What is his new job anyway?

I can't imagine they'll be hiring - how will they attract new players at this point?

Thread lurker asking: How does GFR roster its older girl teams if girls chased out? Is it easy enough to find and fill spots with higher level players? Or are there enough girls teams U14+ that GFR starts consolidating teams as the girls get older so they need to be cutting as they go?
