Not sure how this plays into this, but the trailer for the next episode, which appears to take place entirely over the course of this one party that includes all the major players including Matsson, shows Kendall saying to Frank "How about we do the reverse viking" and Frank saying "Am I supposed to know what that means?" I am guessing "reverse viking" refers to Matsson (Scandinavian, viking) and this might be Kendall trying to pull Frank in on some anti-Matsson scheming. If this blows up in his face, that makes Kendall and Roman 0/3 with the Old Guard since taking over as CEO, and I could see them uniting to pull something, like asking for a vote of "no confidence" from the board on Kendall and Roman's leadership. Between potentially scuttling the Matsson deal, Kendall fudging numbers and video of his dad to push Living+, and Roman exposing the company to major employment litigation over not one but two firings of high profile women in the company on the same day, they have a great argument for it. A board vote that is a referendum on Kendall and Roman could be very dramatic because it would pull in players like Ewan, Shiv, and Tom, and make them pick sides, plus no doubt the board would be interested in Matsson's read on the situation due to the pending deal. |
+1 and all the kids are mimicking their dad a lot since his death. Roman's treatment of women and abuse of power, Kendall's dicy ethics regarding trashing his dad in the press and lying to investors, and Shiv's weird dynamic with Tom. I think the sudden death of Logan is triggering a bunch of regressive behaviors from all of them. |
I don't know if that is true of Geri. She seemed like Kendall in that the thought of her taking control seemed to fire a spark in her. She's the most competent out of all the lot. |
Depends what path is available to her. I don't think Geri necessarily needs to take control of Waystar to be satisfied. Agree she's competent and seems to have an instinct for leadership. She's savvy though, too, and there is real value at that level in a GC with CEO experience who is a woman, especially at a company like Waystar that is old media but has it's toe in a bunch of stuff (tech, real estate, consumer products). I can think of a number of company's who would view her as someone they have to vet during a CEO search because there is pressure to diversify the C-suite and there are not enough women and POC out there with relevant experience at that level. If Succession were real life, I would bet that Gerri was the CEO of another company within the year. And the smart move is not to publicly sue or make hay out of her firing/sexual harassment experience, but to privately use it to get what she wants from Waystar in order to make the leap she needs to take the helm somewhere. She wants her public reputation to remain positive, not become a high profile face of the #metoo movement. She's self interested, and not a justice warrior. |
It's impossible to have that much money and not be surrounded by people who either want your money or only like you because you have that much money. |
Yes, totally agree. Roman listening to that clip of his dad making fun of him was so brutal. |
I don't know, some people seem to manage it. You could also always give your money away. You are not required to spend it on a yacht that is 12 ft longer than some other billionaire's yacht in order to win a dick measuring contest that literally no one but you cares about. Like if anyone has a choice in how they live their lives, it's billionaires. |
The finale is going to be 90 mins long. I don't know if I can cope with that, I normally only last 30 mins an episode. |
DP. I don't think that's true at all. Look at Drew Barrymore, who had an incredibly dysfunctional and inappropriate childhood. She is the very model of stability and nurturing motherhood. I think that is often true with people like that who grow up and yearn for the family life they never had. Doesn't always happen, but it certainly does sometimes. That said, I seriously doubt this will be the way Succession ends up! Dysfunctional all the way, baby. |
Where is Ewan in all of this? And I always found it strange that we only saw Greg's mother once, in the very first episode (I think). Isn't she related to these people too? |
I’m not sure whether they’ll be able to tank the deal or not, but one thing they mentioned in this ep is that the Mattson deal gets shareholders (or maybe just board members? Not sure?) half cash and half stock. So everyone has a vested interest in Mattson not being a total f***up who trashes any stock value going forward. So the baby steps about Mattson being irrational are significant (and if Shiv ever cares to share her blood story that would be even more significant) towards the goal of trashing the deal. Question - Kendall indicated at one point that they would be able to still buy Pierce without selling to Mattson - how is that possible? I thought they needed the Mattson $ to go out on their own and buy Pierce. And I agree with many of you here that Greg has been sidelined/underused lately but his line to Tom about how his presentation isn’t great but it won’t matter because no one would be paying attention? Perfect. |
Good point about the half cash - half stock deal. I also appreciated Greg’s line at the cringy start of Kendall’s presentation, about how all Tom has to do is mop up the blood. I wonder if Greg is being sidelined because of the harassment allegations. |
Walt Disney himself proposed this in the 50s. Disney has created neighborhoods like this. |
Not saying people can't recover and thrive but drew has had multiple relapses and failed marriages. Not a shining example |
Yeah, Celebration is a good comp. It's not totally the same - but close enough that I see this as actually kind of feasible. I was thinking of the Villages, too. |
