Succession - Season 4

I noticed someone's GIF on twitter this morning showing that Kendall was writing a "1" with his foot in the sand on the beach, reminiscent of Logan calling him his #1 son.

I hadn't noticed that.

One other thing about movie to Logan from beyond the grave - it's setting up a weird dynamic, no? It used to be Logan who abused Roman by belittling him. Now it's Kendall doing it (though he's using the movie of Logan). I think he was doing it in a jokey way, and above I even thought he was doing it as a sort of Christmas gift, because he thought it might help kick Logan into gear. But it's also possible that Logan's cruelty is just being passed down to Kendall as part of the succession. Hard to say.

Early in the episode Shiv was also watching a clip of Logan dissing his kids. It's like he's never really left for any of them.

Yup. I don't think Gerri is "fired fired." She'll tell Roman he didn't mean it, he'll shrug, and that'll be it. Or that's the point where Roman doubles down again and makes a big mistake and really fires her.

I think one of the Old Guard has to go because I think there's further fracturing/conflict that has to happen to get to the eventual climax of the story. Gerri is the most prominent character and has the most emotional tie to the viewer, so she's a prime candidate. Frank's firing could also have some emotional heft because (and I'm repeating myself) Frank seems decent. He's also Kendall's godfather. So is he's cruelly treated/humiliated that's also a good plot device.

Karl could be fired but there's not the same dramatic potential.

Karl won't be fired because he already had that confrontation with Kendall, in the hall right before Kendall's Living+ presentation. Karl said Kendall "had his (Karl's) d*** in his hand" but they he (Karl) also had Kendall's, because he'd squeal about the fake forecasts if he were fired. Kendall went on to give a shout-out to his "great CFO" in his presentation.

That shout out was a big "you're implicated and part of this buddy." Also cringed when Karl was all high-fivey after the presentation. They all fellate the power.

Is Living+ Kendall's attempt to keep Mattson from being able sell off all of Waystar for parts (and/or keep Mattson from wanting the deal)? Because you need all the relationships between the parts to do the different parts of Living+ (entertainment, security, electronics, health care, etc)?

They have a few ideas for keeping Mattson from taking over, and one of them is to increase the valuation so high that Mattson can't afford it. At the end of the episode they were all crowing about how Kendall's spiel had done exactly that. Until something else happens....

Maybe finding out that Living+ was valued fraudulently will make it seem like the entire deal was valued fraudulently, even though Logan generally had things valued pretty conservatively.

If it comes out that Kendall had the Logan video edited, then Logan's reputation is preserved while Kendall's looks even worse. In fact I'm wondering if they showed us the weird video exchange between dead Logan and Kendall exactly so Kendall's fraud gets uncovered. I mean, if they wanted to show us Kendall's incompetence, there were so many other possibilities, like that little Living+ house for starters.

Yes, Karl is cringe and he's desperate for a big buyout and golden parachute. But Kendall still can't fire him.

That house scene was SO cringey. You know the set designers were cursing Kendall behind his back. And then to decide not to use it, after they had done all the work on it... gaahhh.

But did anybody else find the finance part really shallow? It's like they were spitballing big finance words with no connected train of logic. In one sense that probably just shows how badly Kendall and Roman are in over their heads. But they weren't the only ones tossing around "big finance words" and part of me thinks it was lazy or ignorant writing.

YES. The ridiculous corporate jargon was appallingly bad - not sure if it was meant to be or not. Jeremy Strong is an excellent actor. Kendall is just so pathetically out of his depth (and Roman too). However, they did manage to sell that Living+ concept successfully, so maybe they're doing something right?

I'm finding Shiv to be pretty repugnant in her treatment of Tom. The way she speaks to him - ugh. She seems to thrive on diminishing him any way she can.

We model our parents relationships even if we know they are wrong. It takes so much therapy to break out of it. What our parents do matters more than anything else.

I hope the ending includes them parting ways with both Logan and waystar, but being brought closer together as family. I have enjoyed seeing them get closer this season.

And I hope Shiv can get a fresh start with a family of her own.

Where would that possibly come from? Their parents never modeled caring behavior. It would be a lie if the kids suddenly started that.
