DD may apply there for regular decision. Lives on nyc area so looking for a few schools that are within driving distance for us. Really likes Cornell and its vibe of “dark academia” campus and such like the hilly, beautiful campus. Was recommended to look at Lehigh but from what my daughter sees online about it, students seem very depressed and unfriendly to one another. She wants an inclusive campus where kids are walking in groups together and creating meaningful friendships, her Hs experience socially hasn’t been the best. Heard about the Lehigh “nod” where students look the other way when passing fellow students on campus. However the programs do seem good and the value seems to pay off according to lists online. Anyone can provide insight or experience to Lehigh and what is has to offer and pros and cons

If she likes the Cornell campus, look at Hamilton and Colgate
Why not nescac?
$74k a year! Too rich for our blood -a family that never got merit and 100% EFC from FAFSA
I have a daughter at Lehigh and have never heard of the Lehigh “nod.” What website is she getting all this from? The students at Lehigh have always seemed welcoming to my daughter and she has had a great experience so far.
Have a family member that went (though not recently) and did not experience what you described. Their main issue was finding a non Greek social life after not getting selected for their preferred sorority.
Just visited yesterday. Campus is stunning and students seemed friendly enough to us.
NP. On paper and in photos it looked perfect for my DD. We visited this summer and she was a little turned off by what she called all the “white business bros.” I told her she was being too judgmental but out of the many school tours we took this was the only one where there was a competitive, kind of “I’m too cool to ask questions on the tour,” sort of chop on my shoulder vibe. Since then, she’s read about the intensity of Greek life and is probably not going to apply.
I went to Lehigh ..20 years ago..but it was still the "work hard/party hard" school with a focus on Greek Life. However, I never rushed or pledged and had a great social life and made many diverse friends..and still friends with all of them today. In fact, the closest friend of my life was made at Lehigh and we speak multiple times a day and I am in her will.
Your DD judged a school by the handful of other high school juniors and seniors- many of whom were probably there because of their parents- who happened to be on her admissions tour? |
+1 at this time of year, you likely got bunched in with a lot of underclass athletes starting recruiting tours who still think they will play at a big name school. The chip you saw was a young and naive, "I'm too good for this school." |
OMG, get in the car and go look at the school! Or, choose a SUNY next door.
My DS has a good friend that goes to Lehigh and he is quite happy, nice and found a great group of friends and seems to be working hard. He loves it, from what I can tell.
OP- don’t be dense. Remind your DD about the supplemental MRS degree.
Has anyone heard any feedback from students about the dorms at Lehigh? I have heard (secondhand) that they are not that great.
