| Trying to get rid of the pandemic weight gain. I took a good look at what I've been eating lately and it's a lot of bread. I eat bread with every meal and sometimes the bread is the meal. I need to cut this out. Someone suggesting to me to eating high protein to make myself too full to eat or want the bread but I also don't like meat especially beef and for religious reasons I don't eat pork. Has anyone else who really loves bread successfully cut it out of your diet? How? What did you replace it with? |
It might be worth investing in a few sessions with a registered dietician/nutritionist. Cutting bread out completely can be a real setup for failure, in my opinion, it is very difficult to do long term for nearly anyone, (especially if you truly love it). and is not necessarily even advisable. It's a major food group but also, not all bread is created equally. There are things you can do like limiting amounts, eating it earlier in the day, fasting and exercising, eating keto bread, etc that allow it a place without it being the foundation of your diet and eating it excessively. I would start with reducing the amount you eat versus cutting it out completely. And yes, you are probably not eating enough protein and veg and a nutritionist would probably start there with you. You are likely spiking your insulin with bread, then are hungry soon after, eat more bread, etc. It's a vicious cycle because you are not satiated or satisfying your hunger with enough protein. |

I need some carbs/bread or I get very hungry. It is like there is no bulk, nothing to absorb liquid. It doesn’t mean I eat white bread with every meal. But with 2/3 meals, I’ll have a little whole grain something. I like Ezekiel bread a lot. For breakfast I have an Ezekiel English muffin with almond butter. If I have eggs, I will have half an Ezekiel English muffin with it. If I have steel cut oatmeal, I add pumpkin seeds for protein.
For lunch I often make wraps with a spouted grain wrap. If I don’t have a wrap and have a salad/a scramble and no grains, then with dinner I include something with a small amount of whole grains too like brown rice, bulgar, quinoa. I usually have yogurt with honey and chia seeds as a snack Including some grains, along with protein and fats keeps me the most satisfied. |

I did for a long time but the pandemic *forced* me to eat bread again. JK, I know I did it all on my own.
Just decided to quit it again, and I'm 1 day in. I have a support buddy who is doing the same. I think more protein and more veggies will help you. Apple & almond butter is a great sweet, protein-y snack!! When I'm off off the wheat, I don't really miss it. |

You don't need to cut bread completely out of your diet. You just need to control your portions better.
That is correct that eating a diet high in protein will be more satiating than bread. There are lots of options for getting more protein that aren't beef or pork - grilled chicken/turkey, fish, eggs, greek yogurt, nuts/nut butters, dairy, and beans/legumes. Also helps to look for lower carb/lower fat versions of the things you like. I love low carb wraps - the ones I get are only 50 calories and 10g carbs. I get the lower sugar yogurt, use PB Fit instead of peanut butter. For snack I eat rice cakes now instead of chips/pretzels. Rice cakes and PB2 - soooo good!!! If I need something sweet, I have some fruit. Tracking your food also helps. At the end of the day it really does just boils down to calories in/calories out (for the most part). |
| Replace white bread with a dense dark bread like Meistermacher or some kind of whole grain sourdough. Then, you still have some bread, but it's better for you. |
| I have a hard time with bread too. I usually just don’t buy it, as long as it’s not in your house you won’t be reaching for it. I do occasionally buy the sprouted English muffins, I think it’s the Ezekiel brand. Those satisfy my bread craving and are filling. When I have a craving, I also get bread with a thick chewy crust like a sourdough. I can have some do that and feel satisfied. |

All I know is that I have the best results with cutting x out instead of 'cutting down.'
Some people are better with reducing the amount. If that's you, maybe make some rules for yourself. X amount of bread per day; you only eat it if you baked it; you only eat if you've already eaten xyz to help fill you up; only after you've exercised....whatever works for you. |
| Whatever happened to “give us this day our daily bread.” Bread has been a staple of human diets for millennia. Prisoners used to get only bread and water. You don’t get fat eating just bread. |

| I have some almonds or maybe cheese and some apple-- the combination makes me feel full enough for a snack (or dessert). I also sometimes add a couple crackers if I'm really craving it. |
