I have two siblings who moved there after growing up in the DMV and they are very happy. One lives within city limits, she was not finding her “people” in DC, wanted to buy a home, but couldn’t in DC on a single educator’s salary. She was able to buy in Richmond and has a great social life. She is very liberal and is happy with the local politics there (in the city). Like any city check into crime in different neighborhoods. City public schools are not good past certain elementary schools - aside from Maggie Walker magnet high school. There are definitely conservative, old money families in RVA, but she said it’s a big enough place that it’s not noticeable if you aren’t in that sphere.

The other lives in the far out burbs and it’s very cookie cutter sprawl, but their neighborhood is new and has tons of young families (which is what they wanted).

I grew up in Richmond and now live in Chevy chase- couldn’t pay me to move back. City is always empty with very little going on compared to the DMV area. Liberals yes but sandwiched between deeply conservative people, alot of crime and terrible schools unless you go the private route. Houses have increased a ton in price no longer making it an incredible value. If i was moving to a lower tier city i would look at Charlotte.

+1. Also grew up in Richmond. Some nice things about it....but yes, it's deeply conservative. I went to a well known private school, and most of my graduating class moved back to Richmond after college. I'm surprised how many are Trump supporters. Not full on MAGA but compared to my circle here, think it would be very difficult to live there.

Op here. Thanks. We are doing private (Catholic) regardless. Planning on living in suburbs.

Dc is pretty dead at night. Lived in the city for 15 years.

Can anyone recommend neighborhoods? Looking to spend less than 800, big lot, walkable would be great

Less than 800k in Richmond city proper in a pretty house with large isn’t going to happen. Also if you think dc is dead at night you likely are as well.

Doesn’t have to be city proper. And yea, along K you can find some action. Not what the rest of us are looking for.

If you’re doing private regardless, skip the burbs and try to stay close in. Bellevue, Ginter Park, near West End, or south of the river in Stratford Hills or Forest Hill areas.

Sure it can. It’s kind of slim pickings right now, but here’s a beautiful house in Ginter Park. 800k budget leaves plenty for renovations.

I would look south of the river, within city or right outside, Bon Air, Willow Oaks area. You can get a half acre lot for well under 800.

Richmond is underrated. We know several families that have relocated there over the past 5 or so years and I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t have a tinge of envy. Most live in the Near West End neighborhood around Libbie Avenue and it’s like some yuppie version of pleasantville. Everyone knows each other, immaculate homes and yards, parents put cones in the streets on the weekends and the kids play basketball with the neighbors etc. Just looks like a fantastic, convenient place to live.
