Richmonder here! The PP who posting several links to houses is totally correct! It’s a great place to live - your housing budget is generous!
Check out some of the voting stats for the areas you want to move to instead of going by some of the PPs who clearly aren’t current as to what is going on in Richmond. For reference I live in the city in The Fan. There is a ton of stuff to do for kids and adults and we have a great restaurant scene! |
Thanks! We are gonna take a day trip to s ope it out. What do you recommend? We have an 8 yr old. |
| Do you have to be in Richmond? People are moving out to Powhatan County. Magnificent homes and a Catholic school there. |
Science museum in the morning it will be empty! Then drive down Arthur Ashe Boulevard to Cary St. Grab lunch in Carytown and walk around going to the local stores. World of Mirth, BCBG, Mongrel, Chop Suey (make sure to spot the bookstore cat Wonton!), ice cream cone at Bevs. Then drive around the Libbie/Grove area to check out some of the houses and the Near West End Neighborhood that I think would be perfect for you. Do you guys like beer? We have tons of breweries in a neighborhood called Scott’s Addition lots of them have something else to attract people like shuffleboard or something like that. I’m not a beer drinker so I don’t have much to offer there I would go to Belle Island and walk across the foot bridge and take a short hike and see the James River before dinner. In the summer it is packed around the river and everyone hangs out on the rocks and swims. Local restaurant for dinner! |
This is a great list. Could also tack on Church Hill for some history. The neighborhood around Libbie Hill park is spectacular in the fall. |

The bang for your buck in dining is fantastic - great restaurants all over for much less than DC. There are a lot of parks and battlefields to explore the outdoors. Great kayaking spots all along the James River. VCU Hospital is excellent for a lot of specialties.
City schools and government aren't the best. |

Thank you!!
Any opinion on St. Bridget 's? St. Gertrude? |
St Gerts is HS only and just left the city and is pretty far out now. Both have a good reputation St Cats/ st Chris is still in the city and definitely old school Richmond and has the price tag to go with it! Also check out St Benedict’s. To be honest they all have good reputations. St Catherine’s/ St Christopher |
Ginter park has a lot of crime and is ghetto adjacent |
No it doesn’t. Look at a crime map. My late 60s parents have been living there for 2 decades. Racist. |
| Ginter Park is a great neighborhood. St. Bridgets is a great school. Richmond is a great place! |
| We moved to the Richmond suburbs in 2021, and it’s a miracle. We’re close to everything, we have a 3,000 sq foot house with a huge yard instead of a rundown townhouse, the parks are nice, there’s much less traffic, and people are friendly. We keep meeting NOVA transplants at the park ( they’re the only ones wearing masks), and everyone is happy to be here. Last weekend we drove a mere hour to go apple picking in the mountains, and the fall colors were gorgeous. The only problems are that I miss all of my DC friends and we don’t have a Nordstrom. |
I should mention that our house is waaaay under your budget. We used Jamie Younger as our realtor and had a fantastic experience. Check out her reviews on Zillow. |
I went to St Gertrude and friends kids that stayed in Richmond have kids in that system. The school has moved out of the city and a lot fewer kids go there than they used to (even though there were only 200 girls there when I went there). There have been some problems where people were pulling kids out but I’m not sure why. Steve Bannon is an alumni of the brother school Benedictine. I’ve gathered people are proud of that fact - a lot of Trumpers. |
Incorrect. Bellevue is also a great family-friendly neighborhood. Northside is rapidly gentrifying. Not sure why so many on this forum view Richmond as a cultural backwater, because that is ill-informed. The city is very progressive and has a vibrant arts scene, dare I say more vibrant than DC’s. Any pp visiting should also be sure to stop by the VMFA (or at least the gardens outside). |
