I have two siblings who moved there after growing up in the DMV and they are very happy. One lives within city limits, she was not finding her “people” in DC, wanted to buy a home, but couldn’t in DC on a single educator’s salary. She was able to buy in Richmond and has a great social life. She is very liberal and is happy with the local politics there (in the city). Like any city check into crime in different neighborhoods. City public schools are not good past certain elementary schools - aside from Maggie Walker magnet high school. There are definitely conservative, old money families in RVA, but she said it’s a big enough place that it’s not noticeable if you aren’t in that sphere. The other lives in the far out burbs and it’s very cookie cutter sprawl, but their neighborhood is new and has tons of young families (which is what they wanted).
I grew up in Richmond and now live in Chevy chase- couldn’t pay me to move back. City is always empty with very little going on compared to the DMV area. Liberals yes but sandwiched between deeply conservative people, alot of crime and terrible schools unless you go the private route. Houses have increased a ton in price no longer making it an incredible value. If i was moving to a lower tier city i would look at Charlotte.
