Middle School Culture Shock

My daughter attended an MCPS elementary school and just started middle school. Since starting she has complained about the amount of swearing done by the students and the "skimpy" clothes the girls wear that show more than some bathing suits. She said there is very little respect for teachers, with kids flipping them off in class when they turn their backs. Is this typical of MCPS middle school?

It's typical of middle schools everywhere.

Unfortunately I'm hearing the same, both at school and on the bus. I think there is some swearing at recess in elementary, though. It's possible that this year is worse than others, due to the effects of the pandemic.

Sadly, yes. Parents don't seem to mind their kids behave that way. I don't care about the clothing but do about the behavior.

Stop blaming the pandemic for everything. Most people are pretending its over and everything is back to normal. Parents need to step up and be parents, not friends.

The cursing yes. DC said students are respectful and hasn't noticed the skimpy clothes. DC is often running late so I drop off a lot and haven't noticed that kind of clothing either. This is a school in Silver Spring.

The bus language was very bad. 6th graders on the bus with 8th graders who had been raised by youtube influencers. I talked with the school administration and they said the bus drivers were supposed to police this. Ha!

Yes but on the tame side. Our W middle school last 2 years ago had students fighting teachers and kids being arrested for distributing child porn (videos of their friends engaged in “acts” showing the videos at school. Not to mention the vaping and sexual hook ups in the all genders bathroom.

Have fun!

The vaping is crazy.

I remember my 6th grader coming home and telling me about the ubiquitous vaping.

The language and the porn is also pretty widespread.

I agree it sucks. We just keep talking about stuff with our MSer and hope she makes good choices.

I remember the exact same behavior in the 80s when I was in middle school and I attended a private school.

There were no phones so no distributing porn was happening. Weed maybe but that’s happening too.

Settle in. It gets much worse.

Yes, I think my child not being in 6th grade inside the school last year has allowed him to stay innocent another year. Now the kids shown him porn on their phones in class, he learned all kinds of new disturbing things.

Not like the public school kids. Not even close. They may be rich but private schools have discipline and standards.
