Greenbrier: $2400 a night
Nemacolin: $1850 a night
Keswick: $1300 a night

The Salamander stay I'm referencing was last October, and the room was $1100 a night.

Problem with Keswick is that the resort doesn't seem to have much more to do than golf! But plus, I guess, is the proximity to Charlottesville? Nemacolin has more to do, but am I really going to do a dog sled or shooting with my husband? Even the pools seem dumb - not like I'm going to go swimming without my kids forcing me too.

Ugh. Really want to take advantage of in laws watching my kids, but I cannot stomach the idea of dropping that much money on a hotel room. I suggested a local stay to my husband, but he doesn't want to stay in DC. Any hidden gems out there I'm missing with 3 hour drive?

Op here yes this is what I’m seeing. If I’m paying that much a night it should involve a luau or passport. No way I’m paying the price of a mortgage payment to sit in a hotel for a few days.

Yes, I know! Unfortunately, this is the only weekend we don't have a million sports commitments (and the only weekend we have grandparent support!)

I'm leaning toward something like the Kimpton in Charlottesville, where we can get a big suite for $575 (seems like a steal at this point!)

Totally agree with OP that hotel costs are out of control. But I think it's true across that board that there are some tourist destinations that have become so crowded with people they are miserable now -- I've heard that about Paris, Amalfi coast, Greece, etc. Basically anywhere instagram famous. I don't think people's incomes have gone up relative to cost of living so either there are tons of people going into debt to travel so they can keep up with social media, or they are prioritizing travel over other expenses (like buying houses?). I would be very interested in an economic analysis of this.

I will use an iPhone for 2 years or more and I use it for multiple hours a day and it virtually runs my life. So yes it is worth more than one night in a hotel.

WOW was going to suggest the JW Marco island, but their regular rooms are $1400 a night. At Christmas and spring break they are only $1000, and not worth it.

The Keswick is only $1000 a night.

Weather looks good in Ft Lauderdale. Not sure about flights but try the delray grande.

You have to choose different locations, different properties and different dates and times than what everyone else is doing.

Also, it’s a K shaped economy. The rich are getting richer on AI stocks and the poor are struggling. There is no middle anymore.

Same with concert tickets. Everyone freaked out at Eras tour pricing and now that’s just what it costs. I don’t even go to concerts (made exception for Eras tour only) but my teen basically works her job to fund her concert tickets. It’s obscene.

Most people go for more than 1 night. So, it's not $2k, it's $10k or more plus flights and food. I spent $20k in Florida last spring break and it was not a luxury vacation.

No, sorry, the hotels in Orlando are actually pretty cheap to make up for Disney ticket prices. I won't say where it was, but it was a waterfront hotel and that included airfare.

100-200/night doesn't even exist in the middle of nowhere. Obviously location dependent, but even places like Lancaster PA for a soccer tournament were 220+ for your budget hotel. Crazy!

So wrong. Open google maps and look in the MD and VA suburbs within 20 miles of DC. 90% of hotels are 100-200 a night.

Picking off peak times/days of the week will of course be cheaper. It's more about the surge pricing and 90% are absolutely not 100-200/night.

Monday through Friday every week are 100-200 a night in the suburbs, it is a fact. Anyone can verify online. Suburbs like Fairfax, Gaithersburg, etc, Don’t make up prices like $500-1000 a night for most hotels. If talking this Saturday valentines day, that is different story, but they are not all $1000 a night.
