Is U Michigan OOS worth $400K?

Anonymous
A Michigan acceptance, a direct admit into certain programs would be well worth it. Just to get-in, no imo

I don't get paying so much to be OOS. OOS applicants have to be at the top of the pool to be accepted, but they don't get the benefits of that super-select outcome on the job market.

Say you don’t know anything about UM without saying anything.

So this discussion should have begun, “I U Michigan OOS worth 360?”

I’m sure the responses would be similar, but then we can say it’s more in line with other the two top publics.

You are admitted into a particular college at U of M. It will not be easy to change majors to something within another college of the university.

Not this again. You are not saying UVA is as good as UM, I hope.

DP here. No clue but I do know someone who attends Michigan who was denied UVA instate, but she applied RD to UVA.

Sometimes kids don’t get into their flagship and they get into comparable flagships. Because California has such a wonky system, kids sometimes get rejected from UCLA & Berkeley and still get into Michigan. I assume the same happens in Virginia, especially in DC suburbs.

I know two Virginia kids who got rejected from UVA but into Michigan. One is doing Engineering at Michigan.

I know a few too from last year.
One was rejected ED to UVA and got into Michigan EA.
Two others were waitlisted EA to UVA, never got off the UVA waitlist, got into Michigan via the EA waitlist.

UVA is a harder admit.

Which just goes to prove that harder admits don’t necessarily equate to academic quality.

Not true. A few select programs are hard transfers, most are not.

That's why I chose Michigan State over Michigan. I was able to try out different majors

Well said. Critical thinking is out the window, but a fool and his money are soon parted.

The "select programs" are the reason to choose U of Michigan. Otherwise, no. For a general admit at that OOS price, no. imo

There is no school worth $400,000.

If you want to stop the insanity cease all financial aid and require every student to borrow the full COA from the federal government. If their parents give them money to pay tuition, tax students at the rate each gift would trigger as a single paycheck.

I suggest you just stay at home and leave the critical thinking to those who employ it.

….since I wasn’t accepted into Ann Arbor…..

The time to form an opinion re: is it worth it, is well before your student applies.

Rest assured, I have most likely come more around than you.

Is any college education worth $400k?

Note: I can report that the tuition is just a part of it. We are spending a small fortune on off-campus housing, food, (ahem) entertainment, etc. in a supposedly affordable area…it’s obscene.

I wonder if the money would have been better spent on investments to supplement my kid’s future earnings following a less expensive college path (eg, community college followed by in-state flagship).
