Is U Michigan OOS worth $400K?

For our family that is a lot of money. For others it isn’t a big deal. They have 4 cars, a country club membership and a beach house so paying that extra 250 isn’t a big deal and is probably worth it.

some of us don't have in-state options, so there is no difference $$ wise between Michigan or Harvard.

Sorry a little side track, but I'm wondering if anyone know whether Wisconsin or UIUC give financial aid to OOS kids? Coming from NJ.

Thx.

Organic Chem with four hundred people. Great learning environment. TAs can’t speak English. Great learning environment. PhD students conducting espionage. Great learning environment. Corrupt athletic department willing to bend rules, cheat, cover up to protect its cash cow. Great learning environment. You can keep Michigan and the cult of do as we say not as we do. It has become an academic mirage, a shell of its former self.

Yes, it is worth it if you have a liquid NW if $5M+

Again not true. Personally know two kids OOS that got good FA in LSA. But they were really top students and both in honors. And brought the costs down to make it comparable full price to their in-state or merit fromSLAC. To the ‘right’ student they will.

Correct. But relative to the total student population, there are very few OOS that get that kind of FA, from my DC's experience.

But I wouldn’t a kid OOS UofM to Michigan for nursing or education major.

I’d agree that the top programs at UMich are really good. Some departments don’t care about undergraduates, and for your tuition dollars go elsewhere.

Please tell that to my DS who graduated from UMich in December 2024 with a degree in physics at a 320K OOS price tag, and he is still jobless.

The premise of this whole thread is ridiculous and dishonest. Michigan currently doesn’t cost that much to attend.

For those who care about accuracy but don’t care to do simple research:

Nonresidents (Out-of-State)

Lower Division LSA

Tuition & Fees* Living Expenses** Books, Course Materials,
Supplies & Equipment Transportation Miscellaneous Personal Expenses Total Budget
$63,962 $16,246 $1,184 $400 $2,372 $84,164
*Tuition and fees listed are based on approved rates for the 2025-2026 academic year. Rates are approved each June by the U-M Board of Regents and estimated budgets are updated at that time. Tuition and fees may be higher or lower depending on a student's program of study; these estimated budgets use information from the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. Current tuition information is available through the Office of the Registrar.

**Based on the unlimited basic residential meal plan.

Almost 90k for Michigan just does not seem worth it.

Have you ever heard of inflation and tuition increase?

Not this again. You are not saying UVA is as good as UM, I hope.

DP here. No clue but I do know someone who attends Michigan who was denied UVA instate, but she applied RD to UVA.

Sometimes kids don’t get into their flagship and they get into comparable flagships. Because California has such a wonky system, kids sometimes get rejected from UCLA & Berkeley and still get into Michigan. I assume the same happens in Virginia, especially in DC suburbs.

I know two Virginia kids who got rejected from UVA but into Michigan. One is doing Engineering at Michigan.

I don't get paying so much to be OOS. OOS applicants have to be at the top of the pool to be accepted, but they don't get the benefits of that super-select outcome on the job market.
