| Deal with it. Your grumpy family is better than pissed off, spiteful neighbors. These aren't normal, polite times. |
| I agree with the PP. Your neighbors were smart in having a generator - every one of our neighbors were running generators yesterday until our power was restored last night. This is life so deal with it. We share a huge generator with our next door neighbor, and we can both plug in to save food, have lights, fans, TV, cable, microwave, coffee maker, blender - sorry, but if someone told me to turn off my generator, I'd tell them to call the police. What kind of neighbor are you? |

Sounds like most of the people who are telling you to "deal with it" have generators of their own. Also sounds like everyone has a "quiet" model.
I looked into getting a natural gas generator after the blizzard and didn't-- probably 80% because of the cost but also because I was shocked when the salesman described how loud it would be. |

Tell them to put in in their basement and run an exhaust hose out of the window. Believe me, they won't want the noise! Generators are very common in rural areas, but they are about as appropriate in urban and tight suburban areas (15' or less spacing between the houses) as pig pens and outhouses.
As for Pepco, contact your state or DC regulator. About 10 or 15 years ago Pepco management decided they didn't want to be a utllity anymore, they wanted to be a Wall St. darling growth stock. They levered the company and fired a lot of linemen to cut costs. Meanwhile they paid management huge bonuses. The ratepayers (customers) suffer for their mismanagement. Worst. Electric. Company.Ever. |
What's the decibel rating for your cheap generator, and what did it cost? If it's not under 65 decibels, and you arent living on "acreage," it's inconsiderate. |
Actually, what kind of neighbor areyou? We have a generator, but turn it off at bedtime. The freezer and fridge will keep, and I actually care about not making my neighbors' experiences any more miserable than they already are. |
| The neighbors are inconsiderate. It is cooler now so they don't have to run it at night. I refuse to buy a generator b/c of the noise. I don't know of anyone in my neighborhood who has it. |
| Ask them to move it to the back of their property. We have a loud generator (sorry didn't get those $2000 Honda generator) and we situate it at the back of our property which is far away from our house and all of our neighbors houses. Then run an extension cord to our house from there. We run it all night long because we are using it for the freezer and the fridge. (We actually have power, so this is what we do when we lose power.) |
|
once it is dark, go over to their house and open the fuel tank, put a few cups of water in there and listen as it starts to sputter and then silence. Then the husbnad will come outside and try to play around with it. He ill check the fuel then wigle a few things then his wife will come outside and ask what is wrong and they will get in a big fight because he spent so much money on his new toy and you will sleep.
i woudl jsut deal with it ask if you cna use the fridge or hang out with them but make sure the fumes are not coming into your hosue, just today a coupel in kensigton was rushed to the hospital from the fumes from a generator outside a window. |
Or you will go to jail, and be forced to live in a neighborhood where every missing cat, dented car, swiped newspaper is blamed on you because you are known to be a bad neighbor. But of course you won't do that, and you wouldn't even talk to the neighbors about it if you were the OP. You would just do nothing but dream up revenge fantasies that you will never in a million years go through with. Either way, what a sad existence. |
You wouldn't lose your food if you turned off the generator overnight and turned it back on in the morning, especially if you didn't open the fridge and freezer in the meantime. And your neighbors would greatly appreciate it. |
| Moving the generator to the back of the property is a bad idea. You lose power the further it has to travel from the generator to the appliance. |
| I really don't think noise from a generator is all that annoying. It's like white noise. |
What about a vacuum cleaner? The cheapies are that loud. |
What is the point of having a generator if you are going to turn it off at night and no power the freezer. I don't see any point to unfreezing my freezer every night. I put it at the BACK of the property, 50 feet from my house, more than 50 feet from any neighbor's house. Sorry if it keeps you up. I don't put it by your window or your property at all. |
