Seriously... what is wrong with Maryland drivers? Is it a lawless state?

We get these stupid threads every few months.

Anecdotally, I find the most dangerous swerving always happens on the 496 / I-95 nub to get to Baltimore, because the lane separation is poorly designed there.

But the most annoying drivers are always in Northern VA. It's not because VA drivers are worse, it's because the traffic and mess of exchanges is so bad.

I didn’t notice anything special about MD drivers. The only thing I noticed is that a lot more people are going 20 over on highways in MD than VA. And some are going 90-100 in 55

I live in MD. The biggest problems I see are tailgating and an ignorance of the turn signal feature on their cars. There’s an urban legend I read on DCUM that driving schools used to teach their students not to signal lane changes. I would like to think this is apocryphal, but the prevalence of the practice makes me wonder.

It's totally a thing MD drivers are the worst!!!

I remember 30 years ago, driving on the inner 495 loop in the Chevy Chase area. People were driving like they were in a roller derby.

Nothing's changed. They still drive like maniacs. What has changed is that now VA drivers also drive like maniacs. I think it's frustration with too many vehicles on the road and resulting delays in getting to a destination.

Whenever I read posts like these from (obviously) white people about “Maryland drivers” I smirk, because what she’s really saying is “Black drivers”.

Maryland has substantially more Black drivers than northern Virginia. And when dcums are complaining about “Maryland drivers” - as I’ve seen first hand in carpool - they are ALWAYS talking about aggressive driving by a driver with MD tags who just happen to coincidentally be Black. 100% of the time.

You’re not hiding your racism, dcum. We see right through it.

The lane-changing thing is obvious to me. Someone not on their regular route doesn’t know when their exit is coming up. As others said, I see DC/VA drivers do dumb sh!t like that disproportionately near where I live in MD.

Sometimes when you signal to change lanes, the VA drivers will pull up to close the gap! (passive aggressive ) ... hence the need for the element of surprise.

You keep saying this in every post or comment about Maryland drivers, but it's so absurd. Oh, you had once carpool experience with people who were racist, so that means everyone who points out the insanity of MD drvers insane? You sound unhinged. I'm mixed, and most of the MD drivers I see behaving recklessly seem to be white, fyi. It's something about the state - it has nothing to do with their skin color.

It has been said before but the MD driver is a thing because there is no sense of ownership by a Marylander in DC. Why not park illegally? There is no consequence. The tickets do not convey. Why not have a minor fender bender. DC Police will simply say contact your insurance. They won't write a ticket. Why not slide three lanes over to take an illegal left turn? There is not traffic came there, so there is no mechanism to write you a ticket that you can then ignore.

As a black DC driver, I can see the Maryland driver viewpoint.

I apologize that Maryland Drivers cut off Virginia plantation owners. Since Abe Lincoln been terrible for you Virginia folk. Back then you would lynch us bad driving Yankees

This is horseshit, sorry. You don’t know the race of the person zipping by you on the exit ramp

Was it near a left exit ramp?

Trust me, I never drive in the left lane unless I am forced to, by having to use a left exit. HATE those.

You really do not see the world objectively, just a heads up.

Just got rear ended by a Maryland driver. I was at a red stoplight. The car insurance information that I collected was fake. Insurance company and MoCo police say that this happens all the time. Policeman says that he was probably undocumented... Outside of his fake insurance information.

And before people ask the policeman was not at the accident. MoCo says move I ER and exchange information. Then file a report. Interaction with policeman was three days later at station.
