"Leave the World Behind" film

I really liked the book. It kind of makes you uneasy..I feel like the movie is achieving this..Julia Roberts has pretty much played unlikeable roles for a long time...it's her thing now.

The 13 year old is 18 in real life. The son looked like he was in his 20s.

Yes, both the book and movie have a feeling of unease. Even though it's not a horror or thriller, I had strange post apocalyptic dreams after watching.

I thought Ethan Hawke did a great job too. I wish there had been more Kevin Bacon. I liked the movie.

Kevin Bacon is such a good blue collar character.

When the $hit goes down, those are the kind of people who survive. Like Daryl Dixon. I was shocked he wasn’t at the neighbors already (where the daughter went).

He had his own stock pile and shelter. He was a survivalist. He will pay them a visit if and when his stockpile runs out.

I actually enjoyed the movie although I found it unrealistic in parts. If that is my house, I am not sleeping in the basement with my teenage daughter. That part made no sense to me. Julia would be lucky I did not kick her and her family out. I did not understand Ali jumping in front of a possible bullet for someone he just met and leaving his teenage daughter behind in a world that he knew was upside down. I also do not comprehend why the son was the only one of all of them that was impacted by the radiation when they all received the same amount. Finally, I don't understand the deer and flamingos in Long Island. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Bacon is an example of how people you thought were friendly will turn during a time of survival.

I also thought a lot of it was unrealistic. So the whole town has “disappeared” (except for the Spanish-speaking lady and Kevin Bacon) yet nobody heard screams or yelling or people frantically running around looking for safety. For example, the neighbors house was all trashed and no one heard anything? Doesn’t make sense…

You should not. Make your own decision.

Agree. It’s worth a watch.

Agree, and it wasn't done in such a way to even feel spooky. Just felt odd and disjointed.

I think neighbor’s house and landscaping were trashed because a plane had crashed in the back yard.

Cliffs Notes: How many of you feel about the ending is exactly what Rose was feeling the entire movie. She needed closure for those 6 characters. She found it and found comfort in it. We, the audience, will never know what happened to those 6 characters and it made us uncomfortable, mad, confused…all the things Rose was feeling.

Yes. This is a very apt description of the ending. A 13 yo would never be able to grasp the true gravity of what was happening around them, and even though they would be stressed and scared because of the adults around them, they would be focused on their own needs.

I was 56 when my DS was 13

I thought this part was pretty well done - generating a growing sense of unease but you don't really know the source. You get a real horror vibe for a good part of the movie and then it starts to become clear that it's man made events and there's a different sense of horror. I agree that the ending was unsatisfying, but it also made sense.

56 yo mother of a 13 yo here. In DC not strange at all.

Here is an interesting twitter thread on a bunch of hidden information people spotted in the movie, including a QR code on the CNN map.

Not every movie gets a happy ending, sweetie. What did you think? The internet would be restored magically, Rose could watch the last episode of Friends somewhere other than a bunker? The deer and flamingoes would become friends and live peacefully together ever after?

I am shocked by the negative reviews but as another PP said, this isn't a very "deep" group. In fact it's a rather dim group.

I think it would have been better if the boy got better from the medicine and the families were reunited. They could have all been in the bunker and bonded and then come out afterwards.

Julia's reaction to the Tesla disaster was like when she saw the cans facing out on 'Sleeping With the Enemy'
