What are middle school girls wearing?

Band t shirts, enormous hoodies, and some black or white jean shorts. Crocs or Nikes (cheap ones, she doesn’t care but just needs something for PE). She would never wear white AF1s.

This is my DD for the most part, too. Plus whatever oddities she’s drawn to at thrift stores. Every group has their uniform.

My rising 7th grader wears"
Jeans
Black leggings
Baggy t-shirts (from Hello Kitty to Nirvana).
Vans
Converse
Almost always a black hoodie.

I have never ever seen anything Lululemon at a PGCPS school. And crop tops are not allowed.

As a parent of tween girls, you need to pick your clothing battles wisely. Bra tops and booty shorts, yup I’ll fight that battle. PJ pants, that is a ridiculous hill to choose to die on.

Diverse in both color and socioeconomics, anything goes, quite literally. At my DD’s diverse public middle school I see everything from jeans, pajamas, leggings, sweats, athletic wear, cosplay bizarre stuff, all black, fuzzy slippers, Nike shoes, tall combat boots..really I don’t think you could stand out if you tried. Everyone wears whatever and anything.

I agree with this. If girls stay away from the mean cliques (most of whom dress exactly alike, lots of lululemon yes), they should be fine wearing whatever they like.

This is what we've seen. When someone makes fun of my dd's outfit she gets a pretty clear signal that it's not someone she'll want to be close to, at least not right now. There was a pretty clear dividing line among the friends from elementary school, those who cared a ton what was cool and those who couldn't care less.

It made for a tough sixth and half of seventh grade until the more accepting kids kind of found each other. They wear whatever.

As a mom of boys, this is what I observe (and personally have zero opinions on):

- high waisted jeans or joggers paired with a cropped top that typically shows very little midriff because the waistband is so high
- short shorts with a huge hoodie or t-shirt
- pjs bottoms with huge hoodie, t-shirt, or cropped top

I myself am in middle school and I would say kids r mostly wearing like red Christmas plaid pants or oversized shirts and sweatshirts. Also Sweatpants. We also wear converse and Air Jordans as well as hoop earrings and claw clips for hair! We also leave our hair out!

Generic wide leg sweatpants

I would stay away from bright/crazy patterns, especially on pants. Mostly just generic colors. If you’re not looking to spend a lot of money on shoes and clothes, I know Walmart has some good stuff, like shoes similar to Nike air forces (just white leather shoes). As long as they look similar it shouldn’t be a problem.

I would never recommend Walmart or Target for clothing or shoes. They are boxy and unflattering.

For just a little more you can take a trip to the Mall and get an idea of,what is out there. American Eagle, Madewell, Holliston all pretty basic. Adidas is great for the athleisure wear, more sporty and comfortable. Also Uniqlo has a variety of basic cute clothing. Offline by Aerie has excellent comfortable clothes geared towards tweens/teens and has great sales.

I wouldn’t recommend Lululemon because moms and grandmoms wear it doing their errands every day. They stay out of the teen stores I mentioned for the most part.

This post is off. Madewell is a mom brand. No tweens/teens wear Madewell, and it's geared toward an older crowd.

Lululemon is an all-ages brand, and a lot of teens and ms students wear it.

Target is all-ages. It's not branded but a lot of teens and ms students wear stuff from there. The band tees and sweatshirts that have been mentioned here, Target is a good place to get those.

Wide leg Brandy sweatpants, usually in light gray. Cropped long sleeve shirts, usually ribbed with subtle buttons or tiny bow at neckline. Boat neck and off the should seemed to come back this year too. Wide leg Jeans or flare, low rise. Wide leg cargos. Velour juicy couture jackets and short puffer jackets with either no hoods or fur lined hoods

Mine is a freshman though. I think 6th graders aren’t as into these things unless they have older siblings.

I am not able to understand these unusually strong feelings about the crop tops. Why is this?

In my country, formal wear typically exposes our midriffs (also many casual wear items for the girls).

This is fine and is not a problem at all. It is also more comfortable to wear in the hot climates, like here, in the summers.

Lululemon is a mom brand. Then 10 year olds figured out these adult sized clothes fit them and a lot of kids wear them. It’s still a basic mom brand.

I don’t know about Madewell being a mom brand. It’s a J Crew company and was initially trying to be a younger version of J Crew. It lost its younger buyers but the Jeans are perfect for teens. It sells a lot of crop tops that I can’t see moms wearing. I don’t know, it has become kind of drab and uninspiring.

This! My kid doesn’t want to wear pj pants to school but in a school that includes shorts with butt cheeks hanging out and crop tops that I would call a sports bra, I’d be totally fine with flannel pajama pants.

In India teens do not have as large boob development in the US, so you will not see much else in India. In the US, unfortunately some crop tops allow one to see more of the boob area. I really don't know how to put it nicely.

Underboob and sideboob are what some of these girls aim for.
