The Marine wasn't mentally ill. He knew what he was doing.

So, we allow a mentally ill person who is a threat to strangers around him to roam the streets BECAUSE he is mentally ill and cannot be held accountable for his crimes and at the same time, we lock up a former marine who intervenes when, according to eyewitness accounts, a mentally ill man threatens innocent people on a subway train.
