If you drink wine...

Wonder if the non-drinking ladies drive during pregnancy? Fly? Or do any other number of behaviors that can (and do) have risk for their pregnancy? I doubt it. Because it wouldn't be as easy to throw stones then.

As I stated earlier on in this thread, my OB said it was fine to have a little wine through the pregnancy. I'm not sure why some of you think you know better than my -very well regarded- OB.

I didn't drink, but I'm paranoid, so don't count that. However, I work with a woman whose (adopted) son has FAS, severe FAS. She's done extensive research throughout the years (he's 22 now), and in general, it takes drinking four or five drinks daily to really cause full-blown FAS. Her son was different from day one, and she had no idea why. He'll have to live with her or in a group home the rest of his life, and yes, he looks 100% normal, other than an indistinct philtrum.

There still can be damage with less drinking. I think they characterize those who drink one drink daily as high risk for some sort of fetal alcohol effect. It's easier for all health professionals to just say there is no level of safe drinking. But I doubt a glass here or there during pregnancy would be damaging.

I'm not the PP who wrote about the discharge report, but I think the point is, drinking while pregnant can cause problems for your baby. So, why risk it? Your baby could live up to 80+ years, and if he/she ever ends up having learning problems or health problems, you will always have to wonder if it's tied back to drinking while pregnant.

So, don't drink while pregnant.

The point of this is that studies are flawed, because if they use her discharge data, given there is no 'dosage' amount for the alcohol consumed, it will show that there was a correlation between 1 drink and her having a preemie, which is ridiculous. This is all about study design...

Thank you PP for an intelligent remark, devoid of histrionics and bad "study" claims!

There are usually threads for all kinds of opinions (the great thing about this forum) and this thread happens to be in support of other women who are pregnant and drinking. I'm not really interested in reading arguments for or against in this thread because well, I'd rather just hear from other ladies that they're enjoying their wine or beer and let's call it good!

So on that note, anyone have a great summer wine they want to recommend? I'm always in the mood to try something new.

I just got back from visiting family in Sonoma and enjoyed a little tasting at Moshin Vineyards. You have to order online because they don't carry it in D.C. It's worth the short wait. The Sauvignon Blanc and the 2007 Chardonnay, RRV are delicious and perfect for summer.

Cheers!

I can't remember the poster, but someone used the term "risk tolerance," which I think is the point. If you are willing to take the risk - however minimal - that wine, Tylenol, deli meats, bug spray, caffeine, or any one of the millions of chemicals that we expose ourselves to every day, may have on your baby, then at least you are making an informed decision. I think there is a difference, however, between 1-2 glasses of wine/beer/mixed drink per week and opening up a magnum of chardonnay and sticking in a straw. Moderation in all things.

Then we travelled to Portugal during my second trimester and I sampled some port. Maybe a glass per night for 3 or 4 days. During my third trimester I had trouble sleeping (and I really just wanted a beer sometimes) so I had an occasional beer or glass of wine-- maybe one or two per week, if that. During labor, I was talking to my OB, who told me that he and his wife stopped for a beer on the way to the hospital before delivering their daughter.

Will someone else speak up who didn't drink while pregnant?

Seriously, you guys might be giving people that are pregnant the wrong impression. Women should not be drinking while pregnant, it could cause serious problems for the baby.

Agree with PP -- this thread was not intended for you. My OB said that drinking a half glass of wine every once in a while is just fine. Why do you think you know better than my doctor? Especially when the studies on alcohol are all based on heavy drinking, not very light drinking? My OB actually recommends a glass of wine for sleep as being less "druggy" for baby than taking benadryl, which gives me anxiety and palpitations.

So, concerned poster, if you're so worried about very light alcohol drinking, I hope you also do not even so much as take a tylenol during pregnancy because NOTHING has been proven safe, empiracally, during pregnancy, and only the same observation-based studies are available. Nobody has demonstrated a credible link between tylenol and fetal harm based on observation; likewise, nobody has ever demonstrated a credible link between very light drinking and fetal harm based on the same type of observation. And before you start trotting out fetal alcohol syndrome or problems "we don't yet know about" please, again, make sure you're not taking any drugs whatsoever, even those your doctor has approved of. Because my doc has approved very light alcohol consumption as possibly being beneficial for relaxation and sleep in my case. So judge elsewhere, please!

this is the exact thing i was told today. i had my 23 week appointment, and am now experiencing back pain and cant sleep. i have EXTREME allergies and cant stand benadryl, because of how drugged it makes me feel. my doctor told me to have a glass of wine after dinner, a glass and a half if i really cant sleep and he has been delivering babies for over 20 years. Moderation is the key in pregnancy.

ditto. The idea of being buzzed while pregnant is very unappealing to me. I do however enjoy the smell of wine while pregnant.

Uh, who said anything about getting "buzzed"? One drink or even 2 a WEEK is not enough to buzz most people.

I dunno. AFter having my son, a half glass of wine puts me under. Maybe it's sleep deprivation, or the fact I rarely drink anymore. But I have almost no tolerance anymore.

For me, it's not about getting 'buzzed' but rather missing the taste of wine and still wanting a little glass sometimes to accompany my meal.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't true. There is absolutely no way that 1 glass of wine throughout the entire pregnancy resulted in the baby being premature. That is just blatant misinformation. LARGE quantities of alcohol are bad while pregnant. Absolutely no doubt to that. But what has not been researched is what 1-2 glasses wine/week do. In fact, the most wide-spread study (from England in 2007) actually showed that 3 year old children of mothers who drank wine 1-2 times/week while pregnant versus those who abstained completely scored higher in almost all developmental categories. And this wasn't a study of 10 kids. It was a study of 13,000 kids. So please - enough with the scare tactics that are blatantly wrong.

Me too! I truly love the taste of a fine wine, and I admit to being a bit of a wine snob. I can't speak for any of those on the board who choose to abstain, but I'm assuming that many who abstain from wine drinking during pregnancy don't drink it regularly in the first place. I never drink coffee, so it's easy for me to say that I "gave it up." And I rarely drink cocktails, so again, it's easy for me to abstain.

I have one glass a week, and I'm positive my child isn't going to have FAS.

I didn't drink with my 20 yr old and she has autisim. I drink with my 17 yr old 40z old english 800. And he is a straight A student and is going to graduate early. I drink with my twins red wine and they are at the tip of there class. It is all in your genes. I had autisim in my family going back years in my family. So don't let the goverment rule what you do with your life. They always want control.
