If you drink wine...

How often do you have it and when in your pregnancy did you start? And did your doc "okay" it or do you not mention it?
Just curious because I'm having a really hard time this time around with the wine deprivation issue. Last time I waited until the third trimester for a half glass here and there but am considering being a little more lenient this time with an occasional glass. (I'm at 18 wks now.)

This is a spinoff of the food rebel thread, BTW.

well - I was drinking wine before I knew i was pregnant - probably 3-4 glasses a week until i found out at about 10 weeks?.?. I lost my taste for it, until maybe the third trimester and then i had about one a week?

I'd have an occasional glass every now and then, but I'd always drink it with plenty of water and a meal. I didn't mention it to my doc. With my first I watched it more (a total of 4 glasses (that's adding up 1/2 glasses) the whole pregnancy, but my second I had a little more than that, especially in the third trimester. I had two doses of morphine injected into me when I was 14 weeks pregnant due to a very painful complication from pregnancy. That stuff made me loopy, etc. yet the doc's said it was okay to my baby. That kind of made me relax more about the wine. I'm definitely not saying I had wine every night with dinner, I'm just saying that if I felt like half a glass of wine every once in a while, I had some. To me, how could morphine be safer for my baby than a half a glass of wine?

pretty much same here. i'm 18 weeks and still have no taste for it. Was at a nice restaurant with my DH and his boss this weekend and had to pass on a $100 bottle of wine because it grossed me out, not b/c I'm paranoid.

With my first pregnancy, I would guess I also had 2-3 glasses a week, no more than 1 glass at a time. I would suppose that started in sometime towards the end of the 2nd trimester.

Yes. One glass of red per week after first trimester. Sometimes a glass 2-3 x's/ week closer to birth when I was uncomfortable and couldn't sleep.

My dr. flat out said that it was fine.

My baby was large and healthy. Now as a toddler, nothing has changed. She is bright, verbal, active and healthy.

I saw wine and had to open! First off kudos to you OP for putting yourself out there and being honest. I did drink wine occasionally, but only when I really has a taste for it. I waited till end of 2nd tri. My dr ok'd it

Have you asked your dr?

Can you drink in public? I never felt comfortable enough and only did with friends and of course at home. However my sister would get into many debates with people when she was prego.

A small half glass once a week would be ok, but if its bothering you THAT much, you may want to re-evaluate your relationship with wine.

My doctor said a drink a week was fine -- for the entire pregnancy. I abstained during the first trimester (maybe had a sip here and there), had about 1/3rds a glass a week during the second trimester, and maybe 2/3rds to 1 glass a week during the third.

With the warm weather, it was most difficult saying no to margaritas, but I thought hard liquor was pushing the limits!

I drink a glass--sometimes two--a week. I was a regular wine drinker before my pregnancy, but I lost my taste for it during my first trimester and had no trouble abstaining. My doctor doesn't have a problem with it.

I'm more of a beer drinker. During pregnancy I usually have 1-2 beers a month. Usually it would be one beer, nursed over an hour and not always finished. I never thought about what trimester I was in....if I wanted one, I'd go for it. I found that even half a beer would get me buzzed so I'd usually stop if I got that feeling.

When I was about 20 weeks pregnant, I visited friends in Montreal and nearly everyone insisted I have a beer with them to celebrate my pregnancy (Francophone Canadians...I guess the attitude is different there?) Most days that week I limited it to one beer, but one day I had three and a half glasses of wine in one evening, spread out over a few hours. My French Canadian friends thought this was perfectly fine, as did my husband and I.

I also had a beer or glass of wine with friends casually whenever I felt like it during my pregnancy. And sometimes the idea of it grossed me out, so for weeks at a time I did not drink at all.

My little one is healthy and delightful at 6 months.

I didn't know I was pregnant until week 7, so was drinking then (1 glass/night). Since then I have been drinking small amounts--usually 1/4 to 1/3 glass of wine, 3x/week--I really don't want more than that, but I do enjoy the taste. I lived in France for a couple years, all my French friends drank (moderately) and have all had healthy babies. On the other hand, I keep it quiet because I know some ppl think its the equivalent of shooting up heroin.

as for my doc--he said "the AMA does not recommend any alcohol during pregnancy, not a drop. That being said, my niece drank her glass of chardonnay every night during her 3rd trimester and is perfectly fine. you need to make the decision you're comfortable with."

If wine is bad, how do you explain generations of Europeans (not to mention most of us who are healthy and in our thirties, before consuming alcohol during pregnancy was a no-no)? The literature says that there is no level of alcohol that has been determined to be safe; I take that as lawyer-speak for "No one is willing to fund a study to determine the line between safe/not safe, so consume small amounts at your own risk." I'll have a white wine spritzer a couple of times per week, but actually I've notice that on the days after I do have a drink, I am really really tired.

I swell up when I have any alcohol...and with the heat and pregnancy...the thought of drinking has my feet shuddering.

actually, while not France, I have most of my family in Spain and none of my cousins drank while pregnant. not all those babies turn out healthy...my aunt was one of them that didn't.
