If you drink wine...

The literature says that there is no level of alcohol that has been determined to be safe; I take that as lawyer-speak for "No one is willing to fund a study to determine the line between safe/not safe, so consume small amounts at your own risk." I'll have a white wine spritzer a couple of times per week, but actually I've notice that on the days after I do have a drink, I am really really tired.

Too much alcohol leading to problems has been documented since at least Roman times....

I had two-three glasses (enough to get a strong buzz) shortly before finding out I was pregnant with my first... Then we travelled to Portugal during my second trimester and I sampled some port. Maybe a glass per night for 3 or 4 days. During my third trimester I had trouble sleeping (and I really just wanted a beer sometimes) so I had an occasional beer or glass of wine-- maybe one or two per week, if that. During labor, I was talking to my OB, who told me that he and his wife stopped for a beer on the way to the hospital before delivering their daughter.

Thank you ladies for inspiring me! I went home last night and had a lovely glass of wine with my dinner. It was such a nice treat. Five weeks to go and counting...

Such a nice inspiration! Your baby will love it. He or she will take wine and beer instead of milk.

I have a question for the wine drinkers...I went to a birthday party of a certain foreign ethnic group and they were giving their babies (around 6 months old) sips of beer, so they could "get used to the taste." Does this seem normal to you too? I was pretty taken aback. I mean, why does a baby need to get used to the taste of alcohol, but anyway...it seems the same sort of logic to me.

While on vacation, I had a glass a night. I'm 7 months now and will have one whenever I'm out to dinner. Relatively speaking, it's actually good for my GD! Ha!

Thank you for the insightful commentary you've brought to this thread.

No, that seems quite young and not normal to me but different cultures have different views.

I guess you're being sarcastic? Alcohol is terrible for diabetes.

I allowed myself one drink a week, with my doctor's permission. One drink was either a light beer, a 5-oz glass of wine or up to 9 O'Doul's "fake" beers. (spread out over the week.) Usually I'd go for the O'Doul's, since I'm single and was still going out with friends pretty often during the pregnancy - I figured I'd better enjoy my life while I could, before the baby came. (O'Doul's and other "N-A" beers have 0.5% alcohol, about 1/9th of a Miller light.)

In the beginning of the pregnancy, drinking a little was a good way to hide the fact that I was pregnant before I was ready to tell people. Near the end, I made sure to only drink my N-A beer from the bottle, so that people could see I wasn't "really" drinking.

My daughter was a surprise pregnancy; I drank pretty extensively in the three weeks before I knew I was pregnant. oops.

In the end, my daughter was born the day before her due date, in the 95th %ile for height and weight and she's pretty advanced in her development and easygoing in temperament, so I don't think the alcohol hurt her. (The majority of my friends would have a drink here and there during their pregnancies; their babies were fine too.)

I LOVE wine... but my mom started pressuring me to cut back significantly (ie. not drink, be like her) months before we started TTC. She has been a special ed teacher for 37 years, and apparently has some theories on alcohol consumption (even in the months prior to TTC) and the link to attention and behavioral problems much later in life. She is a very smart and well-educated lady, but I have no clue whether her theories are founded on anything concrete. That said, the night before we found out we were expecting, my husband and I enjoyed a bottle of wine at Jazz in the Garden.. and I have no issue or worry about that. I won't drink during this pregnancy- not because I think it definitely will harm the baby, but because I just don't think the risk is worth the reward. That said, I have had two random dreams this week about 1)drinking tequila while pregnant (I hate tequila!) and 2)drinking champagne while pregnant. Apparently I miss alcohol much more while I am sleeping.

Actually I've read some epidemiological studies on it. most babies with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder appear fine until a little later on and can have behavior problems, struggle with depression, cutting, etc., though to most people they seem fine (by looking at them/grades, etc.)

Give me a break! Most studies are flawed in their control. Behavior problems, depression, cutting, etc. can all be attributed to numerous factors, including genetics, environment, birth order, and on and on.

I didn't drink at all during pregnancy - I didn't want to risk it. BTWs, my friend had a preemie and when the Dr. asked if she drank during pregnancy, she mentioned that she had 1 glass of wine during the whole pregnancy. The discharge report stated that she drank while pregnant.
