Dems spend way too much time catering to the corporate crowd. We can definitely benefit from what DeSantis is doing and won't be blamed for starting it.

WTF?

The first PP and the second PP's interaction reveal the cognitive dissonance among Democrats. This is what happens when you have no rational basis for your ideology, just "feelings".

oh, this is rich.

The R party has embraced conspiracy theorist, Q followers as political leaders; continue to hold on to the stop the steal rallies two years later, and still want their Insurrectionist in chief to run in 2024; exercise cancel culture on private businesses using their political clout, even as they blast private businesses for exercising their own cancel culture using their social clout.

But sure, it's the Dems who seem to be irrational ones .

Very well said - the ongoing sanctimonious self delusions and double standards are beyond belief

Please! Even with this move, Florida is far more attractive to a business like Disney than a liberal state like California or NY. Per other posters, Disney should be positively celebrating this gift of legislation by DeSantis now that they will be able to transfer administrative costs to the government. They are probably popping bottles in the executive offices.

No not any more. Business do not like the big hand of republicans government telling them how to run their private business. Business are pulling out of Florida because it is so anti business, anti free market. All republicans want to do is increase taxes, increase regulations and red tape and expand government.

Go woke and go broke is going to be DeSantis' presidential rallying cry.

My guess is it is more in retaliation for their completely hypocritical position. If they had this stance for years and were consistent with their their support for the gay community, my guess is this wouldn't be happening. However, they continue to do business with and even expand business into countries that have banned gay marriage and even condemn gays to death, so they are really just going after DeSantis, who in turn is fighting back.

The matter is not complicated. DeSantis is not an idiot - you may not like him but he is not an idiot. DeSantis would not have gone after Disney if they just did the standard corporate dance about LGTBQIA2S+ and threw in some references to equity and stakeholder capitalism. Disney vowed to work towards repealing the Parental Rights in Education law, which has broad popular support among FL residents. If Disney wants to dabble in politics, well, DeSantis is showing them what that means.

Actually, polling has been all over the place on the Don't Say Gay law. The extremely vague wording of the law doesn't help (it's intentional, of course). And since when do Republicans care about polls?

It's a temper tantrum from DeSantis. Trying to picture how it would go if, say, Gavin Newsom tried to raise property taxes on all Chick-Fil-a locations in California because he doesn't like their LGBT stance.

Literally every Dem candidate for the midterm elections should be hammering this point. DeSamtus cleverly has this not kicking in u til 2025 but the numbers are there and should be broadcasted far and wide.

The math is no so simple.

Currently Disney is able to self govern meaning tax and provide services.

Desantis is taking away Disney's ability to tax. Taxes at Disney properties will now go to local and state gov not Disney.

If Disney wants to maintain its current level of services it might need to continue to privately fund things such as EMS without the benefit of the tax revenue it currently enjoys.

I googled around for analysis and there is none to be had. The closest I got to are what you mentioned above, that Disney effectively taxes its own properties and use that to pay for the services it provides. As a result, property tax bill owed to the two counties it sits on would grow as a result. It also gets to issue bonds to use debt to pay for things. Having visited Disney recently, the roadways and facilities are all very nice, I agree. The government-paid roadways and facilities would not be as nice. But hey, Disney is all-in for more equity, right?

What a petulant thug De Santis is—taking a page right out of Trump’s playbook by punishing those who cross him. It sure gets his face and name in the news…which is exactly the point.

I don't hear any howling from the Democrats when Disney removes diversity from its movie content to make sure it can make profits in China. Either Disney has a stance or it doesn't. Which is it?

DP.. the US isn't China, though. To do business in a different country, you have to follow their laws, and that may include their "decency" laws. Just like when Chinese businesses want to do business in the US, they have to follow our laws, like bribery laws, which can be culturally accepted in China.

Also, unlike China, the US has freedom of speech, which includes companies (per SCOTUS). This is purely a retaliatory move by Desantis to appease his base. And it's also extremely hypocritical since Rs decry "cancel culture", which this move is basically about.

I'm just not sure a government can punish a company financially on the basis of not liking a position it takes. To go along with the Newsom example above, could Fairfax County go after the National Firearms Museum from a tax perspective because it the county government doesn't like guns?

It's the same deference they give to Democratic politicians who subscribe to misogynistic beliefs.

Guest you did not google very hard? Disney does not taxes it’s own properties. Are you really this stupid or are you just trying to support DeSantis attack on business?

Analysts Say Florida Stripping Disney World’s Power Could Cost Residents and Counties

The special district does not exempt Disney from paying property taxes,” Clark said. Disney is Central Florida’s largest taxpayer, paying nearly $300 million per year in property taxes to Orange and Osceola counties, as well as about $250 million in other state taxes.

So, if those counties had to assume many of the roles the Reedy Creek Improvement District now performs, they would be doing it without any real expanded income, save some potential permitting and other construction fees

Funny how businesses are fleeing California and going to red states like Texas.

I don't know if taking away special tax breaks is the same thing as "punishment". NRA is a different ball of wax because the organization exists to advance certain political viewpoints. NRA is therefore fair game and is often the target of government action - as exemplified by the actions of NY. Disney needs to decide what it wants to be - a business with the goal of making money, or a business with the goal of advancing a controversial political agenda like the NRA.

It is why the republicans are now doing what China does. Glad to know conservatives justify their actions by saying China does the same thing so it is okay. Republicans = big government control of private business. When your next 5 year plan coming out?
