TJ results out

“All students offered admissions need to record the intent to attend TJHSST or not by Friday, April 26 at 4:00pm.”

One would assume offers to those on the waitlist will go out shortly thereafter.

Wows, I wonder what happened last year.

That was not last year. DD as a freshman last year and I recall seeing this email string post while we were delivering that spring of 2022 whether to send her or not. It was from the 2021-2022 year.

Moreover Math 4 “normal track” is mainly a sophomore class. “Normal track” for the first batch of new admission system kids would have been Research Statistics and Math 3 freshman year in 2021-2022. That means it was mainly - or at least a very large share - the kids under the last old admissions system class in Math 4 that year.

Bingo. The email header even says "Spring '22" on it. The only kids who would have received that email from the Class of 2025 would have been significantly advanced in math.

Remember the Class of 2025 only had about 20 something Alg 1. So, this course had a few Alg 1 from the Class of 2025 and most from Geo from the Class of 2026. This shows an even crazier truth, even Geo freshmen in the new admissions are not ready for a normal TJ curriculum.

Straight from FCPS, here are some initial stats (note: these are PRIOR to tomorrow’s deadline, after which offers go out to waitlist kiddos).

Of course, the 550 selections are random lottery choice from 2600 applicants. No mechanism to pick the most qualified in math and science. As with any random probability selection, there is an even spread of math and science talent from top 1/5th of the class with algebra 2 to the bottom 1/5th with algebra 1, and geometry students fill the middle with wide varying range of proficiencies.

The spring 2022 math email- at that time would the majority of kids taking math 4 been juniors? Or was math 4 (at that time/pre-admission change) mostly taken by sophomores at that time?

Math 4 at that time would have been primarily taken by sophomores from the last class to be admitted BEFORE the admissions process changes.

It's worth noting that the Class of 2024 is an exceptional class that is enjoying some outstanding college outcomes - but that email refers to their efforts and not the efforts of students who were selected by the new process. Unless they were significantly advanced - in which case, they're probably not the subject of people's anger here.

Email is referring specifically to students selected by new process. Sure not all of them, and certainly not the top half of them. It is the bottom half that the math teachers are referring to that the new essay lottery process allowed without merit evaluation.

Lottery? Why do posters keep referring to a “lottery” (ie - random selection) as part of the TJ selection process?

FCPS states:

“A holistic review will be done of students whose applications demonstrate enhanced merit; 550 seats will then be offered to the highest-evaluated students. Students will be evaluated on their grade point average (GPA); a student portrait sheet where they will be asked to demonstrate Portrait of a Graduate attributes and 21st century skills; a problem-solving essay; and experience factors, including students who are economically disadvantaged, English language learners, or special education students.”

Here is the corroboration:

Please post proof there is a “lottery,” or stop spreading falsehoods.

You are clearly ignorant of the meaning of the word “lottery.”

DD decided to stay at his base school after hearing from multiple channels that the culture among the schoolmates at TJ is toxic.

A holistic review of not many things. Echoing what colleges say but not what they do.

No. It’s not. 2021-2022 year was the first year (or freshman year) of the new admission system. RS and Math 3 is where most TJ kids start for their first year - that is the track they are on if they did algebra in 7th. That means Math 4 kids would have been primarily sophomores (old system) or kids tripled advanced who had taken algebra in 6th. It would not have been the “new wave” of less traditional MS kids and kids who took algebra in 8th.

My DD is surprised why she was even offered when all she did was algebra 1, and her best friend with two years advanced math at another school was put on waiting list. Not wanting to be at the bottom of the class, she rightfully declined. She is more worried about herself, as she should be, than worrying about her schoolmates.
