Am I just weird, or does this sound bother you as much as it does me.....

Either that or your Elaine Bennis.

So picnicking down at the Cherry Blossoms and repeated viewings of Sophie's Choice are not on your bucket list. I've heard worse.

Are you just jealous b/c your nasal passages are constantly clogged?

I can't understand this.

Anonymous wrote:For my entire life, there is one sound that bothers me more than any other: the sound of someone sniffling. I especially can't stand when it s that constant, every ten seconds, sniffle.

If I sit next to someone with the sniffles, I have to move. And God forbid I can't leave and am forced to endure the sound, I feel like I am going crazy. I have a friend that I walk with, and she sniffles throughout our walk and it has gotten to the point where I make excuses not to walk with her because I hate the sound but I don't want to offend her.

So is this just me, or does anyone else get this annoyed by sniffling?

Yes, OP, you are weird.

You are also very self centered that you would be so concerned about what others are doing and how it annoys you.

OP I get chills and cringe (like an actual physiological reaction) when people touch their forks to their teeth. It makes me cringe just THINKING about it!

Not weird. Sniffling and constantly coughing up loogies is gross. Hearing a loogie cleared makes me dry heave.

Yes, I have allergies, that's no excuse.

There's only two things that frighten me-the threat of nuclear war and carnies, circus people.

Agreed-- small hands, smell like cabbage!

I hate it too. A guy at work was doing this in a meeting and I wanted to say, "um, are you 12? get an f'ing kleenex and blow your nose." And I do have pretty bad foliage allergies in spring/fall.

It's not just you, OP.

For some reason when my dad sniffles and when he has his allergies, it drives me insane. Ever since I was about 6 or 7 I've had this problem. I'm 16 now and I still have this problem. I'm pretty sure I have some for
Of OCD.

I FINALLY FOUND PEOPLE I CAN RELATE TOO! I don't know when I started hating the sound of sniffling, but I cannot stand it! My family eats a lot of spicy foods often and I hear my mom sniffle cause the food is so hot. I get so mad and my thoughts completely focus on her sniffling. I feel so bad when I get upset because its something that I need to control. I cannot control others, but I can control myself and my behavior. But it pisses me off!

I go to a university and I sit in front of all my classes. I have this girl that sits right next to me AND SNIFFLES EVERY SECOND! I always turn to her and roll my eyes or look mad at her. She does not get the picture, but I don't know what to do. I always think, is it just me and I'm a very irritable person? Am I mean? Why me . I just want to be able to sit in a room with others and not care if they are sniffling, or the big thing I hate to hear, is gum chewing/ popping.

I WILL LEAVE ANYWHERE I AM, if I hear someone pop gum. It is so hurtful to my ears I hate it. I hate being in class and the professor is teaching and people smack their gum like nothing. It is rude and disrespectful and I feel like I am going crazy. I don't know what to do. I focus immediately on it to the point that I am basically hunting for the sound. As soon as I hear it I look in the direction its coming from and get so mad at that person as if they are doing it on purpose to me.

I want a pill to be normal, God how I want this issue to go away, but I think everyone has little things that piss them off and mine are sniffling and gum popping.

I fantasize sometimes if I was a professor, I can control the environment and say, " there is no gum chewing in the class, if I see you chew or hear you pop gum, I will ask you to leave!"

But how funny profession I am going into is medicine. I will be dealing with sick people that of course will be sniffling. Instead of business cards for your wallet, I think I will buy mini tissues with my business info on it and maybe a slogan lol.

Please help anyone.

Agreed, throat clearing and sniffling is gross.

My mind fixates on the physiology and all the mucous that must be bound up in a person and so just hearing these noises makes my eyes water.

I hate the sound of sniffling so much; I can't even put something up my noise- never done a flu mist or nasal spray. I'd be a lousy cokehead.

NP here. Thanks to the PP who suggested looking up "Misophonia". I think I have this!

I was on the bus yesterday and this guy was sitting directly accross from me listening to his head phones and he kept bobbing his head and moving both his hands and fingers as if he was playing an imaginary piano.

I wanted to punch him in the face.

I was looking down, reading my book and his behavior was very distracting. I kept seeing his head bob and hands move out of the corner of my eye. I just put my book up right up to my face to block out all vision of him. He was annoying as fuck.

I also have sound sensitivity as well. I can't stand when I'm alone in a room with someone and we are talking and it sounds like they are screaming or using their "outdoor" voices. My mom does this and it drives me nuts. I always interject and ask the pesrson if they can speak in a lower volume.

Same thing with the radio in a car or the TV. I cant stand loud playing radios or TVs. I'm always asking DH to turn down the TV. Or to turn down the volume in the car and he gets annoyed.

Yeah, I definately have misophonia!

---

The symptoms of Misophonia are listed as:

People who have misophonia are most commonly annoyed, or even enraged, by such ordinary sounds as other people clipping their nails, brushing teeth, eating, breathing, sniffing, talking, sneezing, yawning, walking, chewing gum, laughing, snoring, whistling or coughing; certain consonants; or repetitive sounds.[7] Some are also affected by visual stimuli, such as repetitive foot or body movements, fidgeting or any movement they might observe out of the corner of their eyes. Intense anxiety and avoidant behavior may develop, which can lead to decreased socialization. Some people may feel the compulsion to mimic what they hear or see.

Anonymous wrote:It's not so much sniffling that bothers me, but people who actively suck in snot rather than blowing their nose. My bro (yes, he has allergies) did it, and now my DD does it, and it drives me BONKERS within seconds.

I also know someone who was nearly driven insane by the woman in the next office who coughed constantly. I mean, constantly for years and years and years (and yes, she had a medical condition also). One can be sympathetic but still aggravated.

With the head cold I got this winter, I could not blow my nose. It absolutely would not come out my nose, which meant I had to make that god-awful sound if I felt like breathing through my nose. If it helps I didn't do it in public (well, public restrooms, but we're all supposed to be deaf to what happens in stalls) and I was miserable.

Sniffling bugs me. It's such a little kid thing to do. When adults do it repeatedly, I want to hand them a kleenex. (I have bad allergies. I blow my nose periodically.)

Worse: phleghmy throat clearing and coughing. It makes me want to hurl. My coworker does this all the time and I want to tell her to go the hell home if she's that sick.

Worst: another coworker has a tic that makes him repeatedly clears his throat. Like every 30 seconds in a conversation. I can't believe his wife hasn't killed him in his sleep by now. that would drive me nuts. Perhaps she is deaf.
