Am I just weird, or does this sound bother you as much as it does me.....

Anonymous
For my entire life, there is one sound that bothers me more than any other: the sound of someone sniffling. I especially can't stand when it s that constant, every ten seconds, sniffle.

If I sit next to someone with the sniffles, I have to move. And God forbid I can't leave and am forced to endure the sound, I feel like I am going crazy. I have a friend that I walk with, and she sniffles throughout our walk and it has gotten to the point where I make excuses not to walk with her because I hate the sound but I don't want to offend her.

So is this just me, or does anyone else get this annoyed by sniffling?

You should be thankful that you and your family members don't have allergies.

Yep, you are definitely weird. (You asked).

It's not so much sniffling that bothers me, but people who actively suck in snot rather than blowing their nose. My bro (yes, he has allergies) did it, and now my DD does it, and it drives me BONKERS within seconds.

I also know someone who was nearly driven insane by the woman in the next office who coughed constantly. I mean, constantly for years and years and years (and yes, she had a medical condition also). One can be sympathetic but still aggravated.

I don't think you are crazy...I HATE the sound of chewing and there are times I feel like it is making me go mad. (Especially if there is only one person eating in a room. Ugh!)

My 15 year old son does this and I want to PUNCH HIM IN THE NOSE everytime I hear it. I scream "GO BLOW YOUR NOSE" each and every time he does it to save myself from leaping across the room and choking him.

I also cannot stand the sound of forks hitting plates or bowls. MAKES MY EARS BLEED.

Is this a form of OCD?

My mom can't stand the sound of sniffling either. When we were little she would always say, BLOW YOUR NOSE.
A sound that makes me nuts is crinkling of candy wrappers or bags of stuff like potato chips. To me it's like nails scratching a blackboard. ARGH!

OK, so I guess maybe I'm weird, but I'm glad I'm not the only one. In general, I am pretty tolerant of other sounds, but this is the big one for me. I guess everyone has their own sound sensitivities. Would be interested in hearing what other sounds people find incredibly annoying....

It also makes.me.crazy.

My DH does it. Sometimes with every inhaled breath....and I want to take the nearest sharp implement and stick it in his forehead.

Aaaaargghgggh.

Sometimes my DCs do it, and I inevitably end up screaming at them to blow their noses. Horrid habit. And it is just a habit....use a tissue, blow your nose, whatever.

Hey OP, question for you: don't you ever get the sniffles? And when you do, what's your reaction to your own sound? Sometimes there's not a Kleenex box around and one can't immediately blow one's nose. I have allergies (in the spring, especially) and I'm sniffling all the time. It's not something I do on purpose.

OP - does it make you cringe like nails on a blackboard, or does it just bug you?

I think it's odd that it bugs you...perhaps you have sensory integration issues? not trying to be rude, hope it doesn't come across that way.

PP - no not rude at all. I am wondering whether this is some kind of sensory disorder myself which is why I am asking if anyone else is like this. It's not like the nails on blackboard sound that makes me cringe, but a sound that is incredibly annoying. I would compare it to the sound a neighbor's dog that barks all the time, the kind of noise that can drive a person nuts.

And no, the sound of my own sniffling does not bother me in the least, but I try really hard not to sniffle in front of others because I since the sound annoys me so much I would hate to do it to others. So if no tissue is handy, I try to sniff it in as quietly as I can.

13:07 -- that's funny. Yes, my DH is the only one I fuss at when he sniffles because he knows how much it bugs me. So sometimes he does it on purpose just to drive me mad! I get him back by clipping my fingernails -- that's the sound that he hates the most!

My "nails on a chalkboard" is nails on fabric (or anything scratching on fabric). Just thinking about it gives me the willies! I HAVE NO IDEA WHY.

Other noises bug me -- pretty much any loud, repetitive noise I can't control (too loud music played by neighbors, dogs barking incessantly, car alarms) -- but I suspect we're all sensitive to that kind of stuff in general?

One noise that doesn't bother me that does bother everyone else is traffic noise -- it's just soothing white noise to me.

Try googling "Misophonia". It sounds like you have this.
