Here is the real problem, PP. Everybody has a different idea of what "sick" means. I totally agree that children with fevers and very sick should stay home. I feel that way more for the child's health than for others, but the result is the same. But this isn't what you guys are saying. Many of you PPs are saying that you don't want a kid with even a runny nose out in public, and that is just plain ridiculous. Nobody here is saying to take a kid in public if it would violate a daycare/preschool policy. What we are saying is that all b/c YOU think my kid is sick b/c he has a runny nose does not mean that he is so sick that he needs to be quarantined at home.

If you are THAT concerned about germs (to the extent that a runny nose bothers you), then seriously - YOU need to stay away from public places b/c many people are sick and contagious before they show any symptoms at all.

Well stated, thanks.

My child's colds are like mine: one or two days of feeling really lousy, maybe a touch of fever (and we stay home those days), followed by a week of runny nose and lingering cough. I absolutely keep her at home when she is listless and ill; once she gets her appetite and energy back, starts sleeping through the night again, and is generally back to her fun self, we resume our lives, no matter what her nose is doing. And if one of you ill-mannered kowtow-to-me-and-mine type parents gets in my face about it, you will get the most (politely delivered-- there are kids around) vicious tongue-lashing of your life.

Holy Crap. What a psycho.

Indeed, PP. Indeed.

I took my baby out of the house at 3 days old to go back to the hospital for the lactation support group. Also, to get her weighed to make sure she wasn't losing weight.

I mean, we take our 2 month olds to one of the germiest places imaginable (the ped's office!) for their check-ups and vaccinations, so just walking around a store or something couldn't be much worse than that, right?

I definitely kept her at home more than took her out, but if I had to run an errand (Babies R Us for a crib mattress since she came early, Tysons' corner, etc.), then I did it. After reading this thread, you would have thought I was a maniac for taking my newborn out, but she never got sick, thank goodness.

If she's picking up meds at a pharmacy, I might mention that Walgreens has a drive-thru pharmacy service. Based on the comments I've read here, it sounds like more people should be using it!
