This seems low even for FT hours, but way too low for PT hours. No one would want to come for before/after school positions for $18/hr.

Yes. The rate quoted above is a full time salaried position with paid vacation and sick leave. For a part time position, it’s hard to get anyone to stick with a job for less than 24$/hr. The people I know who have part time nannies have a lot of turnover, even when they pay well.

Does she fully support herself on that or does she have other support?

Yup! She’s been with us for almost 5 years so clearly it’s working on both side.

"Yup" to which question?

Yes she can fully support herself. She even bought a home after 3 years working for us. It’s not like she’s making 10$/hr like many people who work retail or 12$/hr like many of the people who work at daycares.Plus overtime on 18$ an hour is quite lucrative. I know there are a lot of people quoting salaries of 25-30$ an hour for full time nannies but honestly I know many people with nannies and I’ve never seen those type of rates. Not for full time nannies.

I'm with you.$18 is plenty high IME. $25-30 is not the norm in this area - PT or FT.

Plenty of people, especially when the recession hits.

$25-$35 is definitely norm in our area for two kids on PT basis. We live in suburbs and require a nanny who can drive. I haven't found anyone I'd trust with my kids for less than $25/hr for PT.

The pay rates are meaningless without the exact area and total compensation package and job requirements included.

After 5 years she's only up to $18/hr? Wow. Little to no raises over the years then.

Just curious, where are you? We're in Rockville/Gaithersburg area and $25-35, while there are some folks that pay that, is by far not the norm. Plenty of terrific options that I've dealt with for $15/hr on a PT basis. No extra benefits outside of some gas money if we're asking them to drive the kids around a lot.

$10 per hour. I live in Georgia close to a university. $10 is all we can do because we're both in grad school. We have a great part time morning babysitter and she has tons of friends she could recommend when she graduates next year.

Funny how different people have different expectations. You get what you pay for.

Not sure what this even means - great quality at ~$15/hr out there. I guarantee you that the level of quality between $15/hr and $30/hr is closer than you think.
