Why do American nannies have such a different mentality? RSS feed

It's because the USA has a stronger economy so most people don't have to work for subsistence wages.

You wannabe slave-masters are grotesque

Absolutely! Many stay-at-home parents perform a multitude of tasks without financial compensation. Having staff handle multiple duties seems reasonable and reflects the versatility many individuals demonstrate in various roles.Magic 8 Ball

When you were a SAHM you were an unpaid housewives and it was your job to perform all those duties 24/7. Your reward was sex with your husband. Apparently, you had a Road to Damascus moment and realized that you had been short changed and decided that you wanted more.

Nannies duties are exclusively child care. They don't clean toilets, wash your clothes, change your dirty sheets, or clean up the mess you leave from a drunken weekend.

I think that's a false distinction everywhere but in the US and DCUM.

Something to do with most in DCUM area working in the public sector?

I’m an American nanny in Los Angeles and I earn $127k/year. It pays better than my old job: teaching.

OP, you’re gross. Sorry you can’t find the slave labor you seem to want so much.

She is a servant.

She's just a nice, reliable, hard working person. My friend doesn't seem to care about whether the nanny has any background in child development. My friend lives in a diplomatic area and every situation is like this. I've visited friends around the world and it seems the same. With the exception of my extremely wealthy cousin who lives in India and has two nannies assigned to his twins, plus a full staff for cooking and cleaning, every other "domestic" seems to cook, clean, and babysit. As a SAHM "domestic" myself for a while, I also cooked, cleaned, and provided childcare (with no child development degree). Why is the American nanny so...specific...that they are nanny and insulted to do anything that pertains to the household (see the post about the lady who didn't want to wash the family napkins) and are parents really that concerned with degrees etc-they don't seem to care overseas, that is for sure!

InThe United States nannies are not servants who cook, clean, and kiss your derriere. In this country there was something called the Emancipation proclamation declaring that slavery was no longer tolerated. If you want a slave then do not hire a citizen of the United States.

Why is it that American wives and mothers have such a different mentality?

There are many men who want a woman who will do domestic chores and procreate and that’s enough.

There are also men who want a woman who looks better than other women, has a college degree and will tiger mom the kids to be successful.

Depending on upbringing, culture, social class come different expectations.

Worker exploitation doesn’t work as well here

I'm sure you're great at your job, but wow, $40 an hour? For that I'd want you to anything I asked you to. I also am amazed that there are many people willing to pay this when you can find excellent, educated nannies for half that. Good for you though

Absolutely good for her. You sound just a TINY BIT salty.
