And that is why your niece needs other people to get vaccinated so they don't pass anything on to her. I have seen a healthy, young-ish (mid 40s), fit adult nearly die of the flu this year. His wife was fine after a week. He had complications (namely dehydration and renal failure plus double pneumonia) that put him in ICU for a week, and yes he had seen a doctor twice that week. He then had a heart attack in the step down unit because his body was so weakened from fighting the flu, they do not know how long it was until he was found. Another six weeks in ICU, mostly on a ventilator, two more weeks in hospital, and three months in rehab he is now home again but it is very likely that he will never be able to work again. He has suffered brain damage and had to relearn how to eat, to walk, to talk and is still partly paralyzed. All because of the flu. 19% effectiveness? Great! That's nearly 1 in 5. One in five that is less likely to die or suffer permanent damage from "a cold." |
| Yes Nanny I get more sick when had flu shot...do you guys even realize flu shot is not good. |
I think you have to do some research and educate yourself. ..flu shot is bad |
What an eloquently worded argument. Citations please? |

I don't get flu shots either. My nanny does not either. I don't see the problem, honestly. If you are concerned, then you and your family should get flu shots.
I would insist on the TDAP though. My nanny has never been sick with the flu (or at all, actually). We've had her for four years. The flu vaccine is not as effective as other vaccines. Every year they have to do their best guess about which strains will be prevalent. I get all other vaccines, but not the flu shot. I have had the flu twice in my life. It is usually not serious unless a person has an underlying health condition. |
Same here. I believe the benefits of the flu shot are way overblown. I would ask the nanny to get the Tdap. |
| Easy: tell her she needs to get the flu shot and TDAP and, unfortunately, this is not negotiable. Otherwise, she can't be your nanny when the baby comes. You are educated; I am educated; your nanny needs to accept this or not have a job. She will probably cave. And if she starts being "sick" all winter, it is time to look for a new nanny. |
Babies under 6 months can not get the flu shot, hence why their caregivers should. This should not be a 4 page thread. Smh. |
