This nanny says she gets the flu when she gets the shot. She did not say she has a compromised immune system or an allergy. |
| I'm pretty sure that peds are still recommending that anyone who will be in regular, sustained contact with a newborn should be up-to-date on the TDaP and the flu shot/mist. I'd talk to your pediatrician. If the ped recommends that the nanny get the flu shot, then tell the nanny that, per your pediatrician's advice, she gets the flu shot/mist. If she refuses, give her the notice provided for in your contract. She makes her choice, you make yours. |
I'm inclined to call a spade a spade. Apologies if it offends
|
Not wanting to get the flu shot does not make one anti axes. Adults have the right to choose what they put in their bodies. Just sat the MB who is the op has the right to request the person caring for her kid get the flu shot. |
Offend no. I have a tendency to agree with your views on vaccination. I understand the subject quite well you see I put myself through undergrad ( degree in microbiology) while working as a nanny, and now work part time as a a nanny while I pursue my masters in epidemiology. I've learned you are more likely to get people to hear your views if you don't insult them first. |
I work in primary and acute pediatric care. I see the people who refuse to vaccinate and then I see the children that get sick because of them. I do not insult people to their face (though there are plenty of times I wish I could) but there are arenas in which people need to be called what they are; this is one of them. To refuse to vaccinate, for the flu, Tdap, whatever else your NF/job is requiring when you will be working with vulnerable populations, is just plain stupid. I'm sick of people sugarcoating this issue and trying to be "respectful" of individual decisions, not vaccinating is a decision that impacts everyone. Why are we letting people off the hook for this! |
THis is off topic, but that phrase (bolded) is also considered a racial slur. Just so you know when you might be offending someone if you choose to... It's in the same category as using "gypped" or "sell someone down the river". |
Sorry to get even more off topic, but this is not true. The term dates back to early Greek confusion over the words for the noun "spade," trough or basin and the verb "to dig." The term "spade" was not used in a racial context until hundreds of years later. To be more on topic, I side with the pro-vaxxers here |
I've never heard of spade used in a racial context ever learn something new everyday. |
| There's a huge difference between getting a Tdap booster which anyone who works with kids should have, and getting a flu shot which is primarily recommended for children and seniors. Not people who work with children and seniors, but for children and seniors themselves. All you paranoid people running around getting vaccinated when you don't need to be and probably shouldn't be, are creating the shortages so the people who actually need them don't have access or have to wait an extra long time. Knock it off with your paranoia already. |
Sure, it may date to then, however it became a slur and is considered offensive by at least some african americans I know. Not all perhaps, but enough, just as with the other examples and many other colloquially used phrases. |

Wtf who calls any person a spade? PP present some citations or GTFO.
OP I used to decline flu shots. This summer I sat down and really read the science; this year I had gotten mine by early September. She sounds stupid to claim the shot makes her sick - it absolutely does not. You are about to add a new baby, right? Perfect time to sit down and rewrite your contract anyway as there will be a different division of duties. Add vaccinations in this time. She can decide whether to stay or not, but I would let a nanny go over this - and I'm a nanny. Absolutely could not bear to risk that with a newborn. |
PP Here: Well first I am going to see if I can get my health insurance to cover it, but if that doesn't work, then yes, by all means they will reimburse me if I end up having to pay up-front for it. I wouldn't have paid it out of my own pocket since I live alone (my kids are grown). I am only getting it done for them. |
| Wow...How did a four-letter titled post get so political?? |
l I never get this junk again,never... |
