I am so confused! Needs help understanding RSS feed

I am in my early twenties and just moved to the US from Ukraine.
I am starting a new job with a family with a 1 year old.
I am guaranteed 45 hours a week at 9 hours a day. However the 9 hours can be any time between 7am and 10pm.
Is that normal, what are my choices
Any advice would be really helpful!

Thanks

Most nannies work set hours, like 9-5, or 9-6 every day. If the family told you right away that they need flexible hours, then I am assuming you knew you had those "flexible" hours. They should give you the schedule in advance. Also, in Maryland everything above 40 hrs is paid 1,5 of your rate. For example, if your hourly rate is $25, you should have 5 hrs paid at $37,5 rate. It is hard to find your first job, so I would stick with bad hours for a year and if it does not work for you, you can move on and find better hours.

No. It isn't normal. They are screwing you and you need to address the situation now. You should have set hours AND. you must be paid overtime for ALL hours over 40. Overtime is 1.5 times you hourly rate, if you are osifnd $20/hr then you will be paid $30/hr for hours over 40 hours worked per week. This is Federal law. No

Also, hours cannot be banked. This means that if the only have you work 30 hours one week, they cannot have you work 50 hours the next week at regular pay.

I hope that you have someone here who can help you and keep employers from taking advantage of you.

Good luck.

Sorry to tell you. But this is a real bad deal for you. No for them. They are asking you to be available for them 7:00am-10:00pm. This is not a Job of 45 hours. Clearly they are taking advantage of you with this terrible schedule. As you will be available for them 15 hours a day and on call always even they are going to set up a weekly schedule.

Because you will be have always split hours not the typical Full time position of 40,45 or 50 hours a week. When you can not really have space for your personal life/social life or just a break.

The normal position that Nannies look for; is the typical schedule 7:00 am-4:00 pm/ 8:00am-5:00 pm / 9:00am-5:00 or even 8:00am-6:00 pm.

In short, they will be paying you only 45 hours a week and expecting you to be available for them 15 hours a week; since they will giving you a different schedule every week as they pleased and what work only best for them. Also as other posters said; they have to pay you the extra hours aswell.

You should try to have an open conversation with them, and try to fix this since the begging. Good luck.

No, it is not normal.

Are you able to work in the US legally? Do you have childcare experience? Do you have a place to stay and access to money while you look for a job?

If yes, then I would hold out for a nanny position with a set schedule.

If you are not able to work here legally, or don’t have any childcare experience / qualifications, you may be able to make this job work. But know that they are absolutely taking advantage of you and most people would not accept such a schedule.

I just wanted to stress to you how very important it is that your new employers pay you time + a half after forty hours per week.

I am able to work legally, but have no child care experience!
I think I will work them and try getting something else.

If you can work legally definitely look for something else. This position is going no where good.

No child care experience may mean you need to take a less preferable position to get experience.

You will be better off working at MacDonald 's.

If you agreed to it, that is on you. I would just make sure they know you need to know the schedule two weeks (or more) ahead of time. Especially if you don’t have experience, this could be a good opportunity to get in the door as a nanny.

“Hey MB, I printed this calendar for October. Can you please go ahead and fill it in through October 15?” Keep this at their house so you know it was agreed upon.

If they don’t fill out the schedule, remind them two weeks ahead. Otherwise you are going to be miserable!

Agree with others, anything over 40 hours is time and a half.
