I recently put up a message about getting punched in the arm by one of my charges. I am currently looking for employment elsewhere, but as I said in my other message, this is my first nannying job and I'm sort of new to everything. I asked the 5yo girl to help me and her brother (10yo) clean out the minivan and she just blatantly ignored me, and when I asked her again, she simply said 'no'. I grabbed the remote from the bed she was on, turned the tv off, and told her that she couldn't watch anything unless she helped us clean the car. She smiles and says "I'm faster than you so I could just get the remote back." I just said okay and turned around, with the remote still in my hand, and closed the door. She proceeds to scream "I DIDN'T HEAR WHAT YOU SAID" at the top of her lungs (the mother was also home). She comes out huffing and puffing and cries when we've already cleaned everything out of the car. Does anyone have any idea what her problem could be? Does she just not like me? Or is it because she's spoiled and I don't give her that type of attention? |
Never ask. Only tell. “It’s time to clean out the car now”. You could also be more playful - when she said she was faster than you and could get it back, smile and say, “not if I put it on the moon!” or some other silly scenario.
All that said, she’s a brat and many have some other issues. And some unsolicited advice: start with a newborn in your next job. Grow with your charge. There’s an unbreakable bond and real love for each other as you both grow. |
Its a combination of her parents, her and you. Why isn't she in school? |
She’s testing you to see if she can get you to quit. I guess she’s won if you are giving up already.
Have you ever taken a child development or child psychology class?? You sound extremely inexperienced. |
Stop. The child didn’t win. Stop being a jerk. OP has every reason and right to quit. And she already said she was inexperienced. |
+1. |
I’ve explained that I’m inexperienced already. Did you read my post? I also made a comment pointing to the fact I was punched and you could easily leave this chat and find it, as it’s close to the top of the forum page. The mother did nothing. That is why I’m leaving. |
OP here, thank you. |
Thank you for this! |
She has school during the day so I provide afternoon care and bring the children to and from their activities. |
Have you been under a rock for the last 6 months? |
Very few activities going on. |
No, which is why she should be in school. |
Okay? |
You were too vague. Cleaning out the car is too big a job for a five year old. A better thing to say would have been "It's time to take all your toys from the van to the house - let's see how fast you can gather them all in this bag." |
