Holiday pay/hours advice from RSS feed

I’ve been a mostly after school nanny for 5 years and take care of four kids. The hours changed once schools closed in March. I’ve been able to accommodate the changes in schedules, as well as managing distance learning for all of the kids.

The kids won’t have school on Mondays, so the family asked that we move to a 4 day work week. I’ll have Mondays off and work 10 hour days, Tuesday-Friday.

I have always had Federal holidays off, and was surprised to just find out that MB expects me to work 10hour days this week since I’ll have “off” on Monday. Monday is a holiday and I assumed I’d work (4) 8 hour days this week, with Monday being 8 hours of paid holiday time.

Am I wrong in expecting Monday to be paid as it always has and then working the remaining 32 hours over four days? School hasn’t even started so the new schedule starts on Tuesday. MB was very upset and is acting like I’m being unfair.

Can other MB’s offer some guidance as to whether my expectations are off and how to proceed moving forward? There will be other holidays that fall on Mondays, and I’d like to write this into our contract to avoid another potential issue later on.

If you Tues-Fri, why would you expect Monday to be a paid holiday for you? I think you are in the wrong.

OP here. Thank you for your input .

A few reasons....

1. I’ve always been paid for all Federal holidays

2. Our new hours begin on Tuesday, when school starts. I’ve been working 12-8 all summer and will now be coming at 8am.

3. I’ve changed my schedule twice over the last 5 months

4. I’m not happy about working (4) 10 hour days. I’d rather keep our 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. I was trying to accommodate their ever changing needs and am hoping not to lose paid holidays because of that. Also, they mentioned they may need to change the schedule periodically and do some Fridays off instead.

Say no to the 10 hours. And, if its not on your work day you shouldn't be paid.

I would expect paid holidays off IF the holiday occurs on a regularly scheduled day.

I’m a MB. If I asked for 10 hrs/day T-F, I’d find it bizarre if my employee thought M should be paid and T-F should have different hours.

Also, if you don’t want to work 4 10-hr./days, you can said no, quit, and find a new job.

I really don’t understand the logic of getting hours off because you didn’t work a day you weren’t scheduled to work.

If I were going to raise this with the family, I would probably say, hey, this new schedule means I don’t get X paid federal holidays anymore, what do you think about adding X days of federal paid vacation?

Sorry meant X days of paid vacation not “federal paid”

This is an excellent suggestion.

I dont think you get Monday as holiday hours if you are not working Mondays.

I am assuming you want to be paid for 40 hours but they dont need you on Mondays so they are trying to acomodate you to and give you FT hours?
If not then just offer to work 4 8 hour days for less money.

OP here. Thank you. I did ask to work 4 8 hour days for less and they said no. They want me there until 6 to make sure the kids have eaten dinner. They also asked that I be flexible to change the day to Friday when needed.

As I mentioned in my initial post, my schedule has changed twice over the last several months. I’ve been as accommodating as possible as I know they are under a lot of stress and the kids are struggling. I was just told about the new schedule late last week which didn’t allow much time for planning on my end. Perhaps it is time to look for another position.

Thank you to all that responded.

Where do you live, OP? In my state (California) anything over nine hours in one day is considered overtime.

Most states only require overtime pay for over 40 in a week.

No, you are getting screwed every which way possible. You should have told her no to the four days at ten hours each. Your cheap boss does have to pay OT.

Now is the perfect time for you to find a new and much better job with decent people. Get the job, give two weeks notice, dnd get on with a better life. Good luck.

Still something OP should check out in her state.
