Au Pair Ban by Administration RSS feed

Hearing from reliable sources close to the the Trump administration that President Trump is about to issue a Presidential declaration that will ban among others Au Pairs in the US for at least 6 months. This would be part of the broader immigration ban that they are going to extend/enact. If anyone is expecting an Au Pair this fall, call your Congressman or Senator now to put pressure on the White House to carve out the J1 visa and Au Pairs coming to the US. This would be an absolute disaster if it goes ahead. We plan to call our Congressman and Senator immediately.

Good. This program exploits both families and au pairs. I won't miss it.

(former host mom, happy to never deal with another dimwitted party girl who came here for a free car and an American husband, but has zero interest or ability to take care of kids).

Try calling the WH switchboard instead, unlikely a Congressional office can impact this. If you do call your Senator or Congressman, try to target ones who are "friends" of the President - may have more mpact.

The ban was expected on come on June 11 but since then hasnt come out. Here is a immigration lawyer who posts frequent updates based on his contacts/connections:

It's just 6 months and APs shouldn't be here during a pandemic anyway.

This.

Coming here on a J1 visa is far from essential. As long as we are on restrictions as a nation, restrictions need to also be on non essential international travel.

Plus with a very high rematch rate there will be a lot of movement.

Sounds like he’ll sign it today. NPR says still negotiating on J1 visas for au pairs.

Good! Former aupair here and now current nanny. This program should be abolished!

See? Who says Trump is an embarrassment. He's fulfilling the wishes of downtrodden German nannies.

Seems like tomorrow will be the day. Nobody knows how au pairs will be affected until the text of the EO is released. Everything else is pure speculation.

If Au Pairs are actually banned, I predict enormous growth in the nanny share market. 2 sets of parents can pay a premium for a less experienced nanny who is capable of shared care.

The smart parents will figure out a way to create a 2 family + nanny social bubble, and will have all the parents work at one house while nanny cares for the children at the other house.

I bet daycare workers will benefit most from this - they can likely double or triple the low pay a center offers.

You know the au pair program is tiny, right? 17,000 au pairs nationwide (as in, an average of 340 per state--though of course they are clustered heavily in some states). pausing program won't make much difference either way--people may do as you suggest but if they do it will have a lot more to do with daycare and school options.
