really getting annoyed with the family I’ve been working for.
For the last few years I’ve been going above and beyond for them, not taking any time off because I didn’t get any paid vacation time or any paid days off to begin with. I would show up on short notice, even on the weekends. I have a set week schedule, and they know I need the money, I clearly told them so on a few occasions. Lately it’s been happening that they give me some time off here and there, not paid off course, because they don’t need me. Today for instance, she let me go home early one hour without any notice, but of course didn’t pay me for the hour. Now, I’m not a gold digger, and I know I took the job knowing they don’t want to pay, but come on now. I’ve been going above and beyond for them, always there for them, clean up the house more and more because the mom just doesn’t keep it clean at all and the housekeeper hasn’t been coming as scheduled. Is it really such a big deal to not pay for that hour, when you know your nanny needs the money? And when she tells me only at 10pm the night before? They used to be better about this, but lately it’s becoming really bad. I see this as a slap in the face, feel totally disrespected.... I started looking for a new job....
But I know 99 percent once I’ll give her 2 weeks notice, she’ll let me go immediately, which annoys me more because now I know I’ll be out 2 weeks of pay.....ohhhhhh don’t know how to handle my feelings right now lol
Thank you!

I guess you live and learn. Sounds like you need a contract that establishes some PTO and a regular schedule, either with this family or the next one.

Just move forward with finding a new job, and make sure that you have a written contract giving you paid vacations.

Why give this evil parent 2 weeks notice?

I'm in a very similar position. We agreed on 40 hours guaranteed, then they took 2 weeks of vacation and didn't pay me, claiming "guaranteed hours don't count if they don't need me" despite that being exactly why nannies negotiate guaranteed hours. I've started looking for another job, it's all you really can do if you can't afford to be in that position (and who really can?).

OP here. Wow sorry to hear that! Did you speak up? They surely know how to mess with us, don’t they! I wish their boss would say
Hey don’t come next week, take it off, relax, have some fun times, but don’t expect a paycheck.
Will you still give them 2 weeks notice? I mean that’s the right professional thing to do, but what if they don’t treat us nice and steal money from us? I think at some point you have to draw the line, right? Now I’m debating to ustbgive 1 weeks notice as she doesn’t really need me there, plus she’s obviously showing me how she doesn’t care about me by stealing money from me. And if I give her two weeks notice, I’m sure she’ll steal those two weeks pay too.

So as a nanny, I want to feel sympathetic to your plight but it’s hard bc I don’t understand why you wouldn’t have a clear contract. First and foremost you need a “go F you savings” so that you never feel stuck in a position. Then you need to make a list of what you want in a contract. Do not accept a position where a family isn’t willing to have a clear contract. And no, I would not give two weeks or 1 week notice if a family treated me badly and messed with my money. I would sit them down that day and explain if I wasn’t paid what was owed then today would be my last day. With years of experience one family isn’t going to make or break me getting another job. D

OP here
You sound mean and harsh, but you’re absolutely right! I guess I have to learn the hard way!
I should have not let them get away with this and have a contract to begin with. I guess they used to be more fair about it, but lately giving me time off unpaid here and there adds up.
Thank you for your input, it makes me understand better. I really appreciate it!

It likely is too late now, but you COULD still request that a mutual contract be drawn up giving you guaranteed hours, paid time off + paid vacation time.

If they decline, then you can issue them your walking papers stat.

Depending on how much you need the $$ right now, you can wait & do this once you have a new job lined up (since they likely will rebuke negotiating a written contract anyway!).....

So sorry you are in this situation OP.
Us Nannies get the short end of the stick a lot + unfortunately your story is very common.

Good luck.

I would not bother trying to reason with this family. Get your new job and quit.

+1. When you get a new position establish a start date. Give notice at current position when you're leaving the night before. Try to work it around a payday.

Yes, I concur.
And re: payday.

If paid by check -
Make sure it CLEARS first.

Suck it up! You are in a heavily unskilled field and the next nanny can replace you for half your wage.
