I'm in a very similar position. We agreed on 40 hours guaranteed, then they took 2 weeks of vacation and didn't pay me, claiming "guaranteed hours don't count if they don't need me" despite that being exactly why nannies negotiate guaranteed hours. I've started looking for another job, it's all you really can do if you can't afford to be in that position (and who really can?).
OP here. Wow sorry to hear that! Did you speak up? They surely know how to mess with us, don’t they! I wish their boss would say Hey don’t come next week, take it off, relax, have some fun times, but don’t expect a paycheck. Will you still give them 2 weeks notice? I mean that’s the right professional thing to do, but what if they don’t treat us nice and steal money from us? I think at some point you have to draw the line, right? Now I’m debating to ustbgive 1 weeks notice as she doesn’t really need me there, plus she’s obviously showing me how she doesn’t care about me by stealing money from me. And if I give her two weeks notice, I’m sure she’ll steal those two weeks pay too.
So as a nanny, I want to feel sympathetic to your plight but it’s hard bc I don’t understand why you wouldn’t have a clear contract. First and foremost you need a “go F you savings” so that you never feel stuck in a position. Then you need to make a list of what you want in a contract. Do not accept a position where a family isn’t willing to have a clear contract. And no, I would not give two weeks or 1 week notice if a family treated me badly and messed with my money. I would sit them down that day and explain if I wasn’t paid what was owed then today would be my last day. With years of experience one family isn’t going to make or break me getting another job.
