Based on a formal survey of 6000 parents

DC $12.25 for sitter $14.00 for nanny.

That sounds low but more in line with what I share with mom friends (which tends to be $14-18 range). The anonymous postings on here are totally outrageous and fake news.

--San Francisco tops the list with an average babysitting rate of $14 per hour for one child, $16.75/hr for two children, and $19.25/hr for three children. For more reasonable rates, head to Denver, where the average pay starts at $10.25 per hour for one child.
How much do parents pay the nanny? Across the nation, nannies earn up to two more dollars an hour than babysitters.

--The national average for nanny pay is $13.50/hour for one child, $15.50 for two children, and $17.25 for three children.
Bringing back date night. A third of parents surveyed said they hire a babysitter 1-2 times a month for a date night, and an additional 32% said they go out at least 4-6 times a year.

DC rate is $14.99 according to this other, separate research.

Again, more reputable than anonymous "parent" postings.

OP, even if that were true, you must agree that someone cannot live on $14/hr in the DC area, right? Younger, crowd legend nannies get paid less than career nannies. Most people on this forum are career nannies who are professionalals in their field and are paid accordingly. You don’t have to hire us, that is fully up to you, but I would never consider a rate so low.

Would love to see the kind of nanny you find for $14/hr. Tell me more. I'd otu don't want to pay $25-30/hr (or $35-40 LA/SF) you don't have to. Those nannies Aldine want to work for you either bad that's okay. It doesn't make it fake news just because you read it online. Go look for example on westside nannies in LA. Most jobs are $25 and up.

Holy typos!! Sorry that was meant to say:

Just to name a few. For all the clowns who say $25 and up is a fantasy.

I'm in SF and I charge $20 an hour to babysit, even one, even if they're sleeping.

I just don't understand how people want a teacher and a housekeeper for $14 per hour. I also don't know what part of D.C this is because where I am, (most) nannies make at minimum $18 for 1 child (I have met a few that make $15 but trust they are looking for a better gig). The fact that parents think its okay to pay a nanny less than daycare, drives me CRAZY!!

Daycare
-multiple caregivers (which let me tell you, these daycare's are about money!! They hire people as bodies! They don't care how much experience you have and they will hire you and make you take a class, just to look appealing to parents- reason why a lot of daycare's are losing GOOD, EDUCATED, AND PROFESSIONAL CAREGIVERS; THEY'RE ALL GOING TO TEACH AT SCHOOLS (with degrees) OR BECOMING NANNY BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY LOVE AND WORKING WITH CHILDREN)
-multiple children
-they don't take care of sick kids
-the younger kids are confined to the same area(s) every day
-the food sucks
THIS LIST GOES ON.......

Nannies
-have children all day with no "REAL" break
-create activities
-take on excursions (and most nannies are out everyday, rain or shine!)
-take care of sick kids
-driving your kids in their car
-only one vacation of their choosing
-no 401k
-most don't get healthcare
-report in rain, snow, hail, tornado's- you name it
-housekeeping- daycare's don't clean your house or wash your child's clothes
-one on one time
-cook
-grocery shop
THIS LIST GOES ON......

I'm sure all the cheap parents are going to have a lot to say, but if you can't afford a nanny, then send your kid to daycare (not in a nice area because they cost) or have your little cousins or nieces and nephews watch them. And the sad part is its the foreign nannies who are making $12 an hour (not all) but nannies talk and those are the ones who complain the most. You want older nannies, degree nannies, nannies with 10+ years of experience but don't want to pay- how does that sound?!

Wrong. We got our nanny from The Help Company three years ago and she started at $25 an hour with health insurance and a killer travel day rate. She is up to $28 an hour now.

No college either - just great experience.

I’m in Dallas and scratching my head over the rates quoted on that page — cannot imagine where you can get a nanny (even a less experienced one) for $10. The local FB group for nanny jobs is minimum $12, and agencies generally $15+.

That said, I do know in Dallas lots of SAHMs, older sisters/young aunts or retired/empty nester women will watch babies for very little money (like $50 a day or something close to / below min wage). Informal live-in family and friend arrangements happen too. There’s also a sizable market of undocumented nannies who probably get paid cash and this is supplemental income for their families. My guess is the survey includes such jobs under “nanny” based on how frequently and regularly one takes care of specific children, and that would take the average down quite a bit.

I would assume the nannies on this forum will skew more educated, more experience and more formal nanny jobs.

Pretty sure the PP above did not understand my comment or I wasn't clear- I'm saying to check those agencies because most jobs are $25 and up and the people who say these jobs are fake news are clowns.

We pay our nanny $25/hour. It is not fake news. If it makes you feel better that you are paid in line with what the article says, then fine, but you're living outside of reality.

There are numerous live-in positions currently listed at 80-120k around the country. That’s live-IN, not live-out.
