When do you hate being a nanny? RSS feed

I love being a nanny 95% of the time. I love my charges and respect my employers. But... there are those certain times when I truly loathe being a nanny.

Interested to hear if other nannies have those moments and what they are!

I have my degree in Early Childhood Education from a top 20 university. I hate having to get on my hands and knees to clean up the floor under the high chair. I understand that not dropping food is a learning process but I hate having to clean it up.

Sorry to jump in since I'm not a nanny, but yikes. I have a PhD from the second ranked university in the world. I don't mind wiping the floor, cleaning the bathroom, etc. It's necessary for the bigger goals I have, i.e. it's a matter of context.

What I hate is having the nanny think of me as competition when we should be one team, working together in a loving but also organized and disciplined way to raise a child to be a good person and eventually a contributing member of society.

We'll your PhD didn't teach you enough that this post wasn't for you to chime in.

I have two charges who don't like to take their naps. At this moment I rethink being a nanny, every single time. I work 10 hours per day and I get that I am paid around the clock, however, I am human and need that moment to have to myself (even if its just 20 or 30 minutes). Both charges scream and cry while in their crib (their 14 and 13 months) and its every SINGLE day. The have sound machines, fans, stuffed animals and snuggled in a sleep sack and still don't sleep or will only sleep a maximum of 45 minutes. It drives me crazy as we spend about 2-3 hours outside every morning before their lunch/snack. Just venting.

I hate coming in in the morning and seeing my charge's night bottle stuck on top of my employer's dirty dinner dishes. I don't mind rinsing off a dish or two and putting them in the dishwasher but seeing the baby's bottle stuck to a dirty plate of dried curry (or something) turns my stomach and starts my day off wrong.

When my friends take fabulous trips all over the world because they have 5 or 6 weeks of paid vacation time. I could save money for the fabulous trips...it's the time off I don't have!

Funny thing is it's usually the MB who views the nanny as competition not the other way around. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to form a team with parents with the children's best interest at mutual heart only to find that it's all well and good as long as I'm the one who wipes the floor. Everytime.

Being expected to clean up messes I didn't make in order to have the house be functional for our day. The long days. Parents who legit do not know anything about childhood development and refuse to learn. Useless DBs who expect me and wifey to do everything for him like he's also a child.

Tough couple of weeks.

I'm the PP MB. Call me! I frequently wipe the floor on my knees while the nanny holds my kid in the mornings. I don't think it's her job exclusively to clean up my kids messes and vice versa.

To the snarky PP and the "you told her" crowd... I certainly didn't get anywhere in life by keeping quiet.

I hate it when the parents are home

I hate being a nanny when the grandparents come for a visit. Ugh...

The only thing I loathe about being a nanny is the thought that some people think what I do isn't a real job. I love nannying, but I wish I got the respect that any other profession gets.

You don't mind doing it but the OP does. OP never said it wasn't necessary or that she didn't see the big picture - she just said she hates doing it. Is it okay with you, PP, if OP doesn't like to wipe up the floor?
