Vacationing with Temp Family and... RSS feed

They're staying in a 5 star Resort. I assumed I was staying in the same hotel. Nope. I helped them settle and unpack and then DB told me he was going to drop me off at my place. I'm at a motel a few blocks away. It's not like a disgusting bed-bug ridden hotel, but it's clearly not The Langham. I'm offended. They sent me a schedule of when they wanted me to work, and I assume I'm suppose to walk. Never offered to pick me up or anything. I'm just with this family for a few weeks and we don't know each other well. They pay me well, but this makes me just want to leave. I've traveled with several other families before and I always stay with the family. I'm included, at least to an extent. Just feeling sorry for myself.

I am sorry, OP, that is truly insulting. However on the bright side you are not responsible for the kids overnight and can get some sleep. Make sure they give you money for meals and all related expenses and never travel or work for them again.

Eh, they should have told you beforehand...but being several blocks away will actually give you a bit more privacy and make the distinction between your work hours and free time more clear.
As long as it's a decent place, it shouldn't be too big a deal.

Wow, that is.....Wow.
Thank god it is only a temp family.

+1 that was their mistake not setting expectations. But they are paying well so let go and learning point for next time

Our nanny always stays at the same hotels with us when we travel. She can order movies and room service, too. I can't get over how cheap these parents are. You deserve better, OP.

Eh, yourself. It's a big deal to treat your employee so poorly. Putting her up in a motel several blocks away and not even providing transportation? Outrageous! I'm an MB btw.

If they don't pick you up or send a pre-paid taxi, don't show up. When they ask, tell them you have no intention of walking!

I would show up hours late every time and really looking dishelved on purpose just to show them you aren't happy to be there
. That's so inconsiderate to put you away in motel.

Wait in front of the hotel where DB dropped you off at your assigned start time to be picked up. Do not offer to walk or take the bus.

I would be SO insulted by this.
It's like they think that you are beneath them!
Not five star hotel material!!

Screw them!
Hopefully they do not dine at Morton's Steakhouse while expecting you to dine at Mickey D's.

Shame on them!

Am I the only one who sees no issue here? It makes sense for a family to spring for a 5-star room for thwir long-term nanny as it is a perk of the job, but for a temp? You are there to do a very specific job and they are required to give you the needed tools to do that job, treat you with courtesy and pay you as agreed. I do think they should have clarified the transportation issue beforehand.

this is pretty much what I was thinking. If it's more than 1/2 mile or requires you to walk in unsafe conditions (no sidewalk on a busy road for example) then they need to provide transportation. If it's less than that and safe then just walk. It's not going to hurt anything other than your pride to walk a few blocks though I completely understand why you're insulted. It was a crummy thing for them to do, especially without warning.

Because that's the norm.

OP, you 100% fucked up by not getting everything in writing. You should know where you are staying, what they're paying for (should be all meals and activities) and when you're working. I feel for you, but learn from this experience.
