Just found this gem... One site advertised as $10/hour, the other at $800/month. At least the $800/month is accurate. I'm just blown away that they think that this is appropriate pay. Obviously they wouldn't be willing to consider an AP either... $184/week, criminetly!

Site 1: Looking for someone who is looking for a long term live in position to care for my child while I'm at work. I work 3 days a week, 12 hour shifts 7am-7pm Pay is $800 a month plus free room and board. You will have your own room. Any questions feel free to ask

Site 2: Looking for someone to care for my baby while I'm at work!

I work 3 days a week, 12 hours a day. 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Would also like to find someone to watch my baby 2 nights a week while I'm at school but that is negotiable and not a deal breaker if not possible.

The pay is $800 a month plus free room and board. You will have your own room

Looking for someone who wants something long term. At least a year.

Our home is in Silver Spring, MD about 3 minutes from Wheaton mall

Its live in for one kid and only working 3 days a week. $800 a month is not bad.

It's 36 hours per week. This woman is offering $5.55/hour. It IS bad. The fact that people like you diniss this shit is why it is allowed to happen.

People are desperate. Some are uneducated, some entitled and some just desperate and overwhelmed. Nannies, we know how hard parenting is. Don't waste time judging and take the job that suits your needs.

No! This is bullshit! Being desperate is not an excuse. If you can't pay a fair and legal wage you have no business hiring someone. Put your kid in daycare like everyone else who can't afford a nanny. No nanny should have to subsidize a parent's desired lifestyle with their own livelihood. Employment laws exist for a reason.

$800/month*12 months/52 weeks/3 days/12 hours=$5.13/hour Regardless, it's still crap pay. APs earn more.

Pretty sure APs make less than $200 a week? For someone in their early 20s just starting out, that maybe wants to see a different part of the country for a year, this is a good gig.

And it's illegal, it's under minimum wage. Live in or not you still get minimum wage

What do live in's get paid if room and board is given ?

Is it illegal once room and board is factored in? I'm too lazy to do the math, and frankly I just don't care. But room and board could easily tack on another $600-800 more depending on where these jobs are and what the accommodations are like.

You're only allowed to deduct the value of the room (because let's be honest, this woman has no intention of offering anything beyond a roof) if you are offering the room for the convenience of your employee. For someone requiring living in as part of the position, ie. For their benefit, you don't get to deduct the value of the room from their wages.

So a test of this would applying to the position and asking what the pay would be if you didn't live in. If the answer is "the same" or "we need someone to live in," what they are offering is illegal.

APs are supposed to get a lot more in the way of accommodations and compensation than $200/week. The AP program is bad enough, but this is worse.

Oh please! I will most certainly judge. These people better go find a church or in home day care. Nannies are always expected to keep mum about stuff meanwhile other professions aren't.

I guess she could raise it to $10.00 and hour and the nanny could get an apartment in the slums of DC and hope to not get stabbed for $1000 a month. Then need a car or metro to get to work and have to leave an hour earlier and get home an hour later with traffic. Clever.

I was an au pair for a year, then a live in Nanny for 2 different families, then a live out Nanny. So I went from not making a lot to working my way up to make a lot as a live out with more experience.
As a Mom now I want someone who likes children and enjoys being around them and has basic common sense. I don't need someone with a degree to make cookies and go to the playground with my 3yo.

As a young Nanny in my 20's the job posted here would have been ideal for me, 3 long days are ok and I have the 2 other days to work for someone else if I want to. $200 a week to do what I like with and have no bills aside from my phone would have been ok.
