Parents: If you think your average nanny with "average" / market(??) pay is so great,... RSS feed

Why the endless parade of disgruntled parents on this forum with all the complaining about their great(?) nanny?

Is it true? You get what you pay for? Yikes!!

I've made the novice mistake of paying more because I thought someone was above average. She was the worst.

The best nannies are the ones who are in it because they love children and not the money. They don't ask for the most money.

You obviously have never hired a nanny.

I am passionate about my line of work because I absolutely adore children. I am very good at my job and I do not come cheap. I still barely get by, but I have my own home to maintain. I am not a babysitter and will not accept a babysitter's wage simply because I love my job. I also respect myself.

You are wrong OP the parents complaining on here are paying above market wages but getting mediocre nannies.

Im stay at home mom. Husband work with Aerospace company. I have so much free time when our only child go to school. So I babysit one infant. I just charge 1000 a month for 50 hrs a week! I love the baby just like my own. But that is not enough for the parents. She wants me to do so many other things around the house. So I quit after 9 days working for her. I just told her this job is not good fit for me. Her husband try to make me understand that this is their first experience having a nanny but its too late.

Another family is a Phd students and husband is senior engineer with BIG company. Lots of money huh? I only charge 7 an hour. Yet she dare to ask if I can go down to 6 an hour. I took care of her baby like a princess! They moved to other city for her intern job. Now they're back in town and want me back - I said I'm not available. While she's in the other city she keep changing her nanny. SHe told me she had 6 nannies in 3 months! Something is wrong with her.

Another family I charged 350 a week for 50 hrs a week job. I quit after one month working for them. They always pickup the baby late (7pm) always forgot to give me my salary (I get paid every Friday) and always refer to a book when dealing with teething, crawling, sleeping etc. I told them every baby is different yet they always do the research day and nite ..duh!!

I do babysitting job because I love babies ( I try to have more children (ivf, iui, clomid etc) but I been bless with only one)

You see some parents never appreciate a good nanny. They never thought of "hey our nanny is so nice lets not make her unhappy"

Now I care fo a 5 yrs old girl. Both her parents are professors . Not much money making so I change $7 YET they pay me $15 an hour They said I deserved it and appreciate me for not charging them anything when I teach her daughter Chinese languages. My oh my!

Agree tenfold! If you are all about the money then you are missing the most important part! More money comes with more trust and only AFTER the nanny has proved themselves indispensable. Parents, if a nanny does not budge on demanding higher pay, send them packing. There are nannies out there that will love your kid and wait for the payoff. Disclaimer: this does not mean that they will accept less than $15, because that would mean they were being taking advantage of in the DMV. P.s. I'm an extremely happily employed nanny.

I'm all about my pay reflecting the value I provide. Simple.

OP, you'd have more $ for the nanny if you used Intuit.

Because this is an "employer issues" board not a "come tell us about your awesome nanny" board....? Obviously. And not every single person who complains states exactly what they pay....

I cannot agree with your blanket statement, PP. I have hired two nannies and the far, far better of the two was both educated in ECD and experienced - and much more expensive.

My first nanny loved my son and was lovely as a person (and only $15 an hour) but did not have the education/experience to engage and teach him or the stamina and desire to keep up with him.

No worker is ever going to accept less money when they can get more money elsewhere. Of course that does not mean that they are better or worth the cost necessarily but you will get a better selection when offering a higher than average rate.

I am "in it" because I love children as well. But I also have a MA in Early Childhood Development (with a BA in liberal arts from an excellent university) and have taught in preschool for five years prior to becoming a nanny. I have been a nanny for ten years. I also sign, speak French and have brilliant references. I will simply not take a position for starting less than $25 an hour. Why would I?

There is a huge chasm in talents, experience and education in the nanny profession now.

And I have no idea which way the profession will go - if it will continue to move toward educated nannies or go back to the nanny being the housekeeper who keeps an eye on the children.
