Which family would you ( should I) choose? RSS feed

Please not I am not in DC so rates are lower where I live. The average rates are $13-15 per hour here.

Fam # 1 - 50 hours ( 8:30 - 6:30), $ 13.60 per hour gross, OT at 20.40. Averages out to $2,386 net per month. They live 10-15 away from me but want extra duties such as parents laundry, grocery shopping, and meal prep or cooking a few times a week. They are offering two weeks paid vacation, gas reimbursement, but no sick days. They will be guaranteeing my 50 hours per week wage regardless if I am relieved earlier. On paper they sounds ok, but I do not want to do parents laundry, and I didn't click with them. Frankly, I was a bit surprised considering we didn't fit personality wise. They have a huge home with little to no infant activities in the neighborhood.

Fam # 2 - 45-50 hours ( 7 - 5/5:30, some days shorter). $ 14 per hour gross, $17 hour OT in cash. Averages to $2, 189 net per month. They live 20-30 minutes away but are only asking for cleaning related to child. Benefits are guaranteed 45 hour weekly wage, 2 weeks paid vacation ( potentially 3-4 weeks), 5 paid sick days per 6 months. I really liked this family and we hit it off. My gut feeling is it the best choice. However, this is short-term ( 3 months) but willing to put off daycare for a year if it proves to be a great fit. They have a small condo in a high-rise with many infant classes.

Both positions start at the same time. Which do you think sounds the best?

I would choose Fam #2. Any parent who demands/expects general housework does not understand the role of a nanny or importance of a nanny as an early teacher.

Always go with your gut.

The only thing I wouldn't love about the second is the short term nature but I'd probably choose it over the first. The first has a lot of hours and a lot of extra duties that I would hate.

Go with #2. Be amazing and a fantastic teacher - take your charge to classes and set up play-dates - and show the parents how much better having a nanny 1s for a child than daycare. You can extend #2 if you are great.

What is the point of a long-tern job if you hate it? Go with #2 and be fantastic!

If fam 2 can't actually afford you long-term, would you/they consider a share?

OP here. They can afford me. I think they wanted daycare for the socialization. Daycare is actually about the same or more expensive than having a nanny in my area.

I am a nanny and former preschool teacher in Los Angeles and I take my charge to a "class" everyday - Music Together and a Parent & Me along with three different story times at the library and a good 45 minutes in the library playroom before each story time. In the afternoons we go to the park and have play-dates. He is very socialized and gets one-on-one attention from me as well. A much better preparation than daycare and the best of both worlds.

Take #2, OP, and as PP said - knock the parents' socks off with how great a nanny can be for their child's development!

OP here. I agree. I am very active with many infant classes, play dates, parks, etc. I'm also very attentive and on the floor with my charge the whole time. I so not use the tv or my cell phone when he/she is up. Also, many positions that will start in Jan. are usually in the area I live now, so the short-term or long-term aspect will work either way.

OP. The only other concern for family # 2 is I may have to leave as early as 5:30am if weather conditions are bad. I wouldn't have to do that for family # 1.

I would still go with #2. I am an early morning person anyway and the traffic is always better in the early morning. On the days when the ploughs haven't been through yet at 5:30AM, I am sure your employers would understand.

They are doctors and expected on time.

I did get another offer but it's M-TH 4-11:30PM and Friday - 9-6pm. The pay is $1900 but can go up $2100 with additional hours. They live 15 away from me. The downside is short-term, too.

OP if you need a help making your decision you should not take care of kids. You said you dont want to do what family 1 wants you to do adn you both didnt click. Why even consider it?

Okay, not you are starting to bore me, OP. Even doctors cannot drive thru roads that are not yet plowed and covered in snow so they will be late as well during blizzards.

Be a grown-up now and make your own decision.
