Babysitting on New Years Eve RSS feed

Anonymous
I am an after-school nanny for a 14 year old boy and 11 year old girl, the parents asked me to baby-sit the kids on NYE. I was very hesitant as I have my own plans for the evening, but they said it was just for a few hours so I said okay until 10pm, but today they are telling me their friends couldn't get reservations until 8:45 and are asking me to stay until 10:45. I said I was sorry but I couldn't, so now they are saying 10:30. I feel bad saying no again as I'm sure they want to go out with their friends as well. Would it be rude of me to just say I'm sorry but I can't stay later than 10?

You had an agreement with them until 10. Stick to your limit, but know they may agree and come back whenever they're done- 10:30, 10:45, 1am...

You made a commitment to stay until 10pm. Stick to it. They will be frustrated but will also know it is their own fault for waiting this late to make plans. Have a great NYE!

Agree. You committed to 10 and you have plans after. You aren't being rude, but they are. You should only have to say no once. I would say exactly what you said the first time, and if they press you again tell them they are welcome to search for another sitter for the evening.

It's a little late to be debating the times, OP, but I agree that you should stick by your guns. If you absolutely need to be done at a certain time to make your plans, let them know and build in an incentive for them to be home on time, aka an upcharge for lateness. Good luck.

OP, if you won't be flexible then don't expect any more work from this family. You don't seem like a very good sitter. Hopefully the family can move on and find someone more serious.

You should be telling this to the ungrateful parents. I babysat for someone at my office and I told her that I had to leave at 10 pm. The bitch got home at 1 am andthe shit hit the fan. She gave me a lame excuse that the person diving wanted to stay. I never babysat for het again.

It's easier for a sitter to find a new family than for a family to find a new sitter.
If you reverse what you said, it would be true. Nice try though.

Not true at all. I am a mom who could find 10 sitters clamoring for my time to interview. I could easily find a sitter thats good enough. There are WAY more sitters out there that need jobs than have jobs.

Warm bodies maybe. I turned down 10 (yes, 10) offers to babysit tonight.
I also get multiple offers for my weekends.
I hear mothers bitching constantly about how it's impossible to find a reliable, trustworthy sitter.
There might be plenty of warm bodies you can pay to sit on your couch for 4 hours while your kids sleep. You will be hard-pressed to find someone with CPR certification, years of experience (who will actually know what to do if there is a true emergency With your children) and will leave your home in better condition than you found it in. Sitters like that are one in a million.
If you claim otherwise, you are lying through your teeth.
A good sitter doesn't have to put up with such nonsense.

I don't need CPR and years of experience to watch HBO on my couch while my kids sleep. I'm not so on edge about my kids choking in their sleep that I would need to hire someone as stuck up as you. And I highly doubt (or expect) any sitter to clean my home while the kids sleep. I can find a sitter anytime I need.

I'd love to see what Suzy Teenager does when someone tries to break in your home (happened to me). I'd love to see what she does when your kid chokes on food (happened to me). I'd love to see what she does when your child has a severe allergic reaction (happened to me).
Go ahead and hire anyone to watch your kids. With me, my clients know exactly what they're getting.
Stuck up or not, I can smell your stank attitude coming from a mile away.

My god, based on your record of childcare I would never want you to watch my kids. At the people I have hired didn't let them choke and eat things they are allergic too and they were smart enough to lock the doors.

I pray for any other children you are left in charge of.
